Leo Niehorster Posted December 31, 2012 Posted December 31, 2012 Just heard about Tom's passing away. Knew he had been battling cancer, but he had seemed to be getting the upper hand. What a loss: personally, as a fine friend, and to the world as a great historian. I will miss him. My condolences to his family.R I P Leo
Simon Tan Posted December 31, 2012 Posted December 31, 2012 We are clearly diminished by his passing. RIP. What a loss.
Marek Tucan Posted December 31, 2012 Posted December 31, 2012 RIP. His contributions into the tank books will be missed
alejandro_ Posted December 31, 2012 Posted December 31, 2012 Sad news as he was a reference writer. I bought quite a few of his books. The 2 volumes on Panzer Truppen were a class of their own. Rest in Peace.
scj1014 Posted December 31, 2012 Posted December 31, 2012 So sorry to hear this. I knew things had been going downhill, but I was trying to remain optimistic. I had many fine conversations with Tom and Bill Auerbach over the years at various AMPS events. I sat in on many of his seminars with my son and older brother. Tom was quite opinionated and always seemed to be in good humor. When he revealed his illness to me a couple of years ago at AMPS East, he and his wife seemed quite optimistic about the outlook. I was able to relate to him my victory over cancer in 1977 and I hope it helped to inspire him in his struggle. I was unable to attend any AMPS functions this past year because of my recent health issues and I regret not getting to see him as usual during those conventions. While we were not close friends, we always managed to have a long conversation at each AMPS convention, not always about armor-related subjects. I will miss those conversations. The armor community has lost an amazing resource and I have lost a friend.
Manic Moran Posted January 1, 2013 Posted January 1, 2013 I have to agree with SJC's comment about his being opinionated. That said, from my conversation with him, I was left feeling I had just been educated by someone with a lot more knowledge on the matter than I had.
DogDodger Posted January 2, 2013 Posted January 2, 2013 He was one of the preemminent armor historians.
