So we have a rather sad development here in the US vis a vis AMTRAK. They have ended any private rail car use on their tracks/trains. Historically, one of AMTRAKS stalwart allies were folks who were part of the Historical Railroading societies that include folks with vintage varnish cars upgraded to modern standards and pulled on the tail end of AMTRAK trains for excursions and travel. During the 96 Olympics the gulch next to CNN had a whole fleet of rail cars where folks were staying in an old yard segment that is now parking lot.

What's rather daft of AMTRAK is that this was a revenue source for them and it's a bunch of allies they've basically told to get lost. The folks with the private rail cars have deep pockets and they have a lot of less well to do friends who they take along on the cars who are also voters and pay attention.

AMTRAK cutting off it's nose to spite it's face.

Just have to set up more private heritage lines. OK, so its slow running, but if you are enjoying a meal that not necessarily a handicap.

We have a similar issue here in the UK, in that many steam locomotives are being barred from the national network due to being out of gauge. its become a serious problem with 2 cylinder outside frame locomotives, because they are fouling the platform edge. And its all because we have had a number of people getting killed by being able (god alone knows how) to fall between carriages and the platform edge whilst drunk and getting run over.

Friend of mine built this one as a commercial project for Railworks. Built on a Standard 5 steam loco chassis IIRC.

There was also one built by Brown Boveri in Switzerland IIRC, order prewar but was only delivered in the postwar period. It still survives to this day, unfortunately minus the gas turbine.

He is still drunk from his success at the Desert Brutaliy competition. He does not notice. ;)

The L85 would be more appropiate me thinks as a British gun.

Only if it was British rail blue with the indecision arrows on the site. Ideal for 1980's British transport police.

Re steam locos's, we were selling to the Americans at a fairly early stage. One of the locos on the GWR in the early days 'North Star' was delivered in 1837 from Robert Stephenson, and was, or so legend has it, built for a US Railway on the East Coast, whom seem to have come up short on the money. Cant speak for where exactly it was though.
