Is there anywhere that has meat pies as a staple? Tis quite tragic that the fine art of pie making seems to be tarts in the us.

snafu_72 Posted July 14, 2012 Posted July 14, 2012 In the Homestake Gold Mine located in Deadwood, SD it was the tradition for the miners to take a meat pie down into the working face of the mine for their meal. These were called pasties which is a term, I believe, that came from the Cornish miners in England long ago. The gold mine has been closed for over a decade and the small grocery store that was located across the street from the shaft that took miners down into the mine has closed as well. While the store was still open, during the time that the mine was being closed down, my wife and I stopped there and ordered two of the pasties to go. It was simply beef or chicken, diced taters, celery, carrots and onions placed between a folded crust, baked and served warm. Of course the miners would have had to heat them after a few hours down in the hole or eat them lukewarm. There were pictures on the wall of the old store showing the miners before they went into the shaft, while working, and then after they came up at the end of their shift. There were also pictures of them eating their dinner, covered in coal dust, and smiling like it was Thanksgiving dinner! I suppose when you are at least a mile under the earth and you're taking a break anything filling was good!

baboon6 Posted July 23, 2012 Posted July 23, 2012 I do like a nice steak & kidney pie. There's a bakery here in Joburg called Not Bread Alone which makes excellent ones and Woolworths (Marks & Spencers) has some good ones too. My girlfriend makes the best ones though.
