Enterprise will be next in the surface ship category. That will take a while.....

There have been suggestions that Enterprise's island might be saved for use as a museum commemorating the history of both this unique warship and also the Nuclear Navy.

I've given some thought to suggesting Richland as a possible location, given that the eight reactors will eventually end up being buried out at Hanford.

Ken, do you think there might be any interest in that kind of project in Bremerton or elsewhere in Puget Sound?

Sad to see that much naval iron being scrapped.

Ken, I detect a note of skepticism in your response ...... Are you implying that Enterprise isn't a true plug & play aircraft carrier? It wouldn't be possible to simply unbolt the island from the flight deck, put it on a barge, and ship it up the Columbia River?

I've heard some speculation that the island will be removed when she's defueled at Newport News, then barged down to Pensacola for permanent display.

Heck, it's large enough to be a new Kitsap Public Library.

You could fit a couple of M47s inside...

If the Enterprise's island went to Bremerton as the new Kitsap Public Library, its architectural style could then be described as being unique and evocative, yet somehow very familiar.

heck, you can mount the island on M47 hulls! Mobile HQ for Kitsap Militia!

EDIT: Btw NR-1 is the smaller sub with the blue tent above part of its hull?

Speaking of the M47, has anyone checked the wikipedia page on this tank lately? ^_^

Hilarious!! :D

  • Washington- The Kitsap Armoured Militia of Washington State have been using M47s since the early 1970s, the core of which are ex-ARVN vehicles and many of these still remain in first line use. The main motorpool is near the Kitsap County Library. The total number of M47s in use per 2012 is undisclosed but the official order of battle contain atleast two full strength battalions which would mean close to 100 vehicles. During the Cold War and up until the late 1990s several hundred M47s from italian reserve stocks were kept in secret storage as preposition material in Italy. Kitsap Militia ordnance officers are also known to purchase large stocks of spare parts from ex-M47 users to keep the fleet in working condition.

Meanwhile in the world of shipwrecks and scrappings.....

18 years ago the ex-soviet Sverdlov class cruiser Murmansk drifted ashore in Northern Norway when it was being towed south for scrapping. The ship sank at the grounding point and have remained there ever since, much to the annoyance of a nearby village that has raised hell for years about radiocativity, pollution and every bad thing imaginable nonstop in the media. So recently it was decided to remove the ship and finally scrap it. A sort of reversed dam has been built around the ship draining the area and enabling the ship to be scrapped on site, which is underway now.

Some photos, old and more recent but also some very pictureque ones:

Great stuff Tony, thanks. The Sverdlov's were a beautiful design, still showing a lot of the Italian influence of the 30s.

Those 15cm turrets would have made great additions to Norwegian CD, until the 90s!

Link to the pictures please, My office is involved in getting rid of abandoned vessels, the main turret from that would look good in our front lobby!!
