Anyone else playing Minecraft. For those of you that dont know what Minecraft is -

Minecraft is a sandbox-building[2][3] independent video game written in Java originally by Swedish creator Markus "Notch" Persson and now by his company, Mojang.

Minecraft is focused on creativity and building, allowing players to build constructions out of textured cubes in a 3D world. Gameplay in its commercial release has two principal modes: Survival, which requires players to acquire resources themselves and maintain their health and hunger; and Creative, where the player has an unlimited supply of resources, the ability to fly, and no concept of health or hunger. A third gameplay mode, named Hardcore, is essentially the same as Survival, but the difficulty is locked on the hardest setting and respawning is disabled, forcing the player to delete his or her world upon death.

It is really quite fun, especially with mods. I play with some online friends who own their own server. They are programers and have worked to program several very good mods to work together in our Minecraft world. Its like playing with legos on your computer. You are really only limited by your imagination.

Minecraft?

Nah no time, what between work and travel...

Have you seen my latest holiday snaps?

The phesant shooting was good,

Nice digs too

I still think the train is the best way to get around on holidays - so much less stress.

I didn't think much of the ferry service though

But the fishing wasn't bad

and the view nice enough

and I should have stuck to sightseeing

Not that the rain lingered fortunatly

and the hotel was well worth it

Truely five star

Richard I made all - well most of those things, the modern house on the cliff and ship were done by a lady who plays on the same server.

I see a swamp and think 'oh I so have to build a castle in that - lets do a Henrician block house, I awlays liked the plan of St.Mawes,' I spot a mound in the middle of a sea and ask myself what a Palmerstonian seafort might look like on it, a nice piece of parkland and decide a bit of late Tudor might do well there.

Now if if it was just waving a magic wand, I'd agree and yawn, but I had to find/mine/make every brick, plank, window pane door and picture from raw materiels and lay them stone by stone - while fighting off assorted creepy crawlies includeing explosive ones that make a right mess of things. Then link them all with an underground railway system (more mineing and a lot of tunneling) then invent the redstone work to mechanise the stations.

Mental Challange - Yes. Design, Planning, project managment, plus basic electonic theory in a awkward aplication

Practical challange - Yep, doing all of the above, inc mineing all the materiels for the structures and tools, while finding sufficent food to 'live' on and protecting self and project

Test of Patience - See above in spades, those three buildings and the railway represent probably three months of casual work.

Adrenaline Rush - Its not exactly PVP in an MMO for sweaty palms, but yes it has its share of interesting moments.

It's an online cross between Lego and Mechano with a good dash of Doom thrown in

I should perhaps clarify my above statement, I can understand that people think something is amusing, it's just that _I_ don't see the charm in building something that's not going to do anything. It's a bit like modeling but you don't have a model when you're done in a way. I don't know how to put it in other words.

Have fun with it though :)

I can understand it might not float your boat, but the whole 'not doing anything' and 'model' bit confuses me. Where does any computer game actually do something or leave the player with anything more substantial than some numbers in a database recording score stastics and perhaps a few 'awards'? Hell even the physical counterparts to Minecraft, like Lego, Mechano etc are equally epherminal if you want to re-use the bits (or else they get quite expensive).

I'm not looking to argue here and I do respect your right to an opinion contary to mine. It's just I've heard the same objections from quite a few people, most of whom are keen gamers who will happily sit down and play games like Eve, BF Total War, WoT (not talking about you Phredde ;) ) or CoH for hours (ok lets be honest - days) as will I. But the only difference I can see between those games and Minecraft is the emphsis on combat. If anything Minecraft provides a greater degree of 'result' with more freedom of action and fewer game mechanics to hide behind or exploit while demanding as much if not more imagination and problem solving. So can I ask Richard, is your 'building for nothing' objection really the problem or is it just that you don't get to gank the opposition from a perfect ambush with an AMX13/90, a battey of bronze 6pdrs, 3x 0.50 MG nests, some claymores, an M-79 and a missle Drake flying top cover? :)

True, still most games have som kind of goal, let it be a board game, a card game or a computer game. I haven't found any goals af of yet in Minecraft. Perhaps it's silly to post something about a game or really anything you're not fond of but... this is TankNet :D

There is the ender dragon in The End. That's kind of a final boss, although you can still play after killing it

My friend / teammate on the server I play on beat the dragon just the other day. We are trying to decided what direction we want to go now.

I was introduced to the Tekkit Launcher tonight. It is a handy little tool that offers you the choice to download and then load different bundles of mods when you launch the game, then it serves as a launcher to start your Minecraft game. I am on a server using the Tekkit bundle.

Here is a video to give you a better idea of the possibilities of what you can create with the different mods. The white armor you see is the Quantum armor. It is very late stage and very powerful. You brush off creepers and walk through lava with that set, but it takes quite a bit of work and resources to make a set.
