What little experience I've had with a laser pointer on a gun is that they are great for teaching trigger control; watching the dot bounce all over the target brings home the necessity for smooth trigger pull. After all, it does no good to center the dot if you snatch it off-target while pulling the trigger. A miss is a miss, whether laser-pointed or not. In the odd chance one has to shoot without lining the gun with one's eyes (hip--or retention--shooting) it can be useful.

Tony just picked up a mag at the Shot show and there was picture of you firing a FN2000, can I get it autographed? :)

Although I've been window shopping at Gander and Cabela's, I've a few questions as I look around for a pistol suitable for CC and would welcome the board's thoughts ...

I'd like the following:

1. 9mm or 40 (380 is too small). Quality high enough not to be finicky with ammo types

2. Excellent quality and reliability. It has to go bang if, God forbid, I am forced to pull the trigger.

3. Polymer frame - full metal is too much to carry.

4. No bigger than a 4" barrel - preferably 3-ish

5. Probably in the compact category ...Thoughts/comments?

Don't post here that often, but follow a lot of the threads. May I suggest you take a look at the Beretta PX4 Storm. I have the 9mm, and also CC a Kahr PM9 which is a realy smooth shooter. The Beretta is ergonomicaly marvelous, first time I picked one up, managed 10" center body mass at 25 yards. The Kahr is small, light weight and much smoother than my neighbors Kaltec.

Just bought the FNP-40 for 500 out the door that included 5 hi-cap magazines and a leather Gould and Goodrich pancake holster.

Photos when I get to the range and get a chance to take it out.

I'm a bit puzzled - I have such a photo but as far as I can recall I haven't submitted it with any articles. But then, articles appear months - and sometimes over a year - after submission, so it's hard to keep track.

Which article was it in which mag?

If you're serious about wanting it autographed send me a PM.

Thanks for the suggestions, since I have a day off today, I think I'm going to run the gun shops today and at least make up my mind what to get. This has been such a brutal, nerve whacking process ... Pics to follow ...

Looking forward to seeing your choice. Bear in mind that there are plenty of great used guns as well! I can think of quite a few I'd like...

The trouble with used stuff right now, is that with the introduction of CC in Wisconsin, anything remotely suitable for carry is almost as expensive as something new!

Posted

Well, that was fun yesterday ... I've narrowed it down to:

SIG 250 Compact

Benelli Cougar Compact (is this the same as the Stoeger??)

SIG 2022

Walther 99 series or PPS or PPQ

CZ75 Compact

CZ P-07

CZ 2075 RAMI

S&W M&Pc

Anything here to stay away from???

Next step is to see if I can rent some of them and put some rounds through.

What is the gun in your avatar/profile pic?

Chris, that's a Martini Sporter in 577/450. A little beat up and needing restoration, but a beautiful example of an African hunting rifle from a very long time ago. They don't, and can't, make them like that anymore!

BTW .. my wife suggests I have enough rifles to equip a small central american nation ... not really, maybe a platoon though. They would have to settle for a lot of stuff over 100 years old however.

Are you able to rent any of these at a range to try them out?

There are a couple shops in the area, and that's the next step.

The P250 seems to have persistent reliability problems. I think its a fantastic idea, and badly want a full sized model in 9x19, but won't risk it at this time. If you hit the various Sig boards, there seem to be a lot of folks who have had persistent problems.

Thanks, I really appreciate reliability. Even if the warranty work is great, I'd prefer not to have to use it.

I've heard numerous bad appraisals of the Sig P250. I think the P226 or P229s would be better...

Did you look at the FN handguns? FNP or FNX?

I had a BSA 12/15 made about 1937 a few years ago - lovely rifle but not really practical for rabbitting so I sold it on. I'd used an earlier one with an insane amount of drop in the stock to win our club trophy back in 1988 against people with the latest Mk V and various Anschutz etc. As the club disbanded due to the land being sold out from under us, that was the last time it was shot for and I still have it on my shelf.

For no-nonsense reliability, I'd go with a CZ; the CZ-75 compact for starters, but that's because I like a steel frame and frame-mounted safety.

I've a Martini Cadet rebarreled into 22LR, it's a fun little rifle to play with. Perhaps the best 22 for the money I've come across are those Romanian training rifles - I picked up a couple of them for about $60 a piece about 10 years ago and they are dead nuts accurate, and not bad looking after the stock is refinished.

I've ruled out the SIG 250 - it's their bottom of the line apparently. I'd prefer not to have to find out how good their warranty service is. I'm going to see if some of the others are available for rental at a local shop.

Seen at the funshow this weekend...

The guy with the table bought it from another dealer who had it marked at $150. :o

Ryan - any reason that rifle didn't go home with you????

I've looked at the FN offerings, but they didn't do much for me. I also looked at a Ruger SR9c, but for some reason, it felt cheap - can't explain it. I'm kind of sticking with the following:

Stoeger Cougar Compact

SIG 2022

CZ75 Compact

CZ 2075 RAMI

S&W M&Pc

I effing wish. It's a damn nice rifle for over 100 years old. It's an even nicer rifle considering what he bought it for.

Well, the guy who had it on his table bought it from another dealer for $150....then brought it back to his table....Not longer after someone looks at it and offers him $400. He thinks about it...then someone else wanders by and offers $600....he thinks "wait a minute something is wrong here..." So he calls a friend to look it up....routine prices of around $1700 has him realizing that he did a VERY good thing buying it for $150....

An effing '08 Parker Hale for $150 in 2012..."Lucky bastard" doesn't begin to describe it.

I've been the lucky bastard too ... 1878 Sharps Borchardt in vg condition for $500 ...

That's sorta like my 1917 .45; I picked it up for $300. The seller said that was the value he determined after some research, but I've since seen $700+/- mentioned for a gun in similar condition. Not nearly as spectacular as yours' but good enough for me!! ^_^

Out of his list, I would go SW M&Pc, agree on the 250, the 2022 is a better gun. The FNP seem like nice solid guns, but very similar in size to the 226. For everyday carry I would go with a M&Pc or G19 and have a smaller single stack 9 or 380 for those days you can't fit a larger pistol.
