Colin Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 Sadly it's likely newer than our support ships.
R011 Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 (edited) By almost a decade, sadly. Iranian Navy ship Kharg was launched in 1977 and delivered to Iran in 1984. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iranian_ship_Kharg The RCN's two Protecteur Class ships were commissioned in 1969 and 1970. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protecteur-class_replenishment_oiler The Iranian ship is pretty much a contemporary design of the Canadian ones, though. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ol_class_tanker_(1965) Edited January 25, 2014 by R011
mnm Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 So a fleet oiler with a helo pad is now a helicopter carrier? This Iranian posturing is funny, a pity they never managed to recruit Muhammed Saeed al-Sahaf to their cause, remember him?
X-Files Posted February 8, 2014 Posted February 8, 2014 TEHRAN, Iran (AP) -- A senior Iranian naval commander says his country has sent several warships to the Atlantic Ocean, close to U.S. maritime borders for the first time. The commander of Iran's Northern Navy Fleet, Admiral Afshin Rezayee Haddad, is quoted by the official IRNA news agency as saying Saturday that the vessels have already begun the journey to the Atlantic Ocean via waters near South Africa. http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/M/ML_IRAN_US_NAVY?SITE=AP&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&CTIME=2014-02-08-10-14-18
Colin Posted February 9, 2014 Posted February 9, 2014 Iranian merchant ships used to come here. A friend of mine who worked as a ship's Pilot, said they were always in terrible shape.

X-Files Posted February 9, 2014 Posted February 9, 2014 Iranian merchant ships used to come here. A friend of mine who worked as a ship's Pilot, said they were always in terrible shape. A buddy of mine told me about Pakistani Navy ship that put into Norfolk. The heads were filthy, but the duty officer explained "Oh, we don't have any Christians aboard. They take care of that stuff". Also, that ship had a disciplinary problem. The Captain put out to sea 13 miles, conducted his Courts Martial and hung the miscreant right there.
Colin Posted February 10, 2014 Posted February 10, 2014 wonder if they will show up on AIS? https://www.marinetraffic.com/en/
Gunguy Posted February 11, 2014 Posted February 11, 2014 I hope the US Navy ignores the ships. To show them any concern or to have a US ship sail within sighting distance would be really dumb.

Wouldn't it be funny if we decided, just for the hell of it, to block out GPS signals to a random area of open water the Iranians were in?

They should have offered them a port visit to Norfolk. They're no threat, and it would have scrambled their eggs to see the fleet.

More likely the Iran press will report: "Glorious Iranian Flotilla Penetrates Great Satan's Naval Base - Demands Surrender of Infidels!"

It would be enlightening to see how long it took them to catch on. Actually, it would be grand to screw with the US Navy's GPS signals, to encourage the practice of celestial navigation. rmgill Posted February 12, 2014 Posted February 12, 2014 Honestly getting them to sink more money/time/manpower into conventional navy operations out of their own littoral might be a great idea.

I met a navigator from the Ike, and he said that if there was a clear night, they still did star shoots. No idea how true that was or if it still occurs, but he indicated there was always a paper chart and star shoot back up to dead reckoning, INS, and GPS.
Josh Posted February 12, 2014 Posted February 12, 2014 (edited) Also while I'm no fan of Iran, everything I've heard about their 'real' navy (not the Quds speed boat types) is that they are a professional force that operates generally respectably and without bullshit like that recent PLAN stunt. I read an article from years ago in the mid 2000's that they once put their entire compliment on deck in uniform and gave a salute to a USN vessel. EDIT: so really, I wish them well, and actually given the diplomatic moves we're making currently, I actually think the for mentioned invite to Norfolk wouldn't be out of place. I feel like the Iranian people and the US have far, far more in common than differences. Both think that cheap gas is their god given right, even if they disagree on which specific god. X-Files Posted February 12, 2014 Posted February 12, 2014 The USN probably has a sub shadowing them just for training giggles.

I have complete confidence in the Iranian Navy's ability to trip on their own shoelaces, so there is no need to elaborate.
