Iran says that..sorry, can't hold back the laughter...it will send naval ships to US coast

While the colour of the sub might look odd at first it does have a fairly logical explanation since it is a coastal sub, but this is another thing that is lost to the journos. ^_^

Submarine camouflage is generally counterintuitive - looking at a periscope or snort depth submarine painted black in anything smoother than the north Atlantic is about as obvious as a cockroach on a white rug.

Indeed, in the calm shallow blue waters of the gulf that color makes perfect sense. I suspect its rather easy to 'see' an LA class if you happen to be over it and know where to look.

Seems fine if what they want is to torpedo the Seychelles.

Everything beyond the water's edge seems to be rather out of focus...

Shep, looks like you're seeing double too.

Well, since they Iranians call a light frigate a destroyer, it's probably the size of an Iranian frigate.

Well, the Jamaran is certainly closer to being a destroyer than the Zumwalts...

But with an eye above another?

Laying down and looking at the screen sideways? *shrug*

I don't see any problem with Iran sending warships to cruise off the US coast. We cruise off theirs.

Just got to be sure to get a valid mail address from them first, for the US Coast Gaurd to send the invoices to, after having to recover half their ships / people.

Regards,

Gerard

A bit of thread necromancy...from Mil.com's 'Early Brief':

Iran Launches Rearmed Destroyer in Persian Gulf

http://www.military.com/daily-news/2013/06/12/iran-launches-rearmed-destroyer-in-persian-gulf.html?ESRC=eb.nl

TEHRAN, Iran -- Iran says it has launched a 50-year-old destroyer on the Persian Gulf after overhauling it and rearming with modern missiles.

Since 1992, Iran has been pursuing a self-sufficiency military program, reportedly producing its own jet fighters, tanks, missiles and light submarines as well as torpedoes.

Tuesday's report by state TV quotes Rear Adm. Abbas Zamini as saying that experts had equipped the destroyer Bayandor during its 20-month overhaul with anti-ship missiles capable of firing 160 kilometers (100 miles).

Zamini says the destroyer joined Iran's navy in 1964 and is named after a World War II war hero.

Destroyer? A quick google shows this thing is a (at most) 1100-ton corvette of the US PF103 design. A bit underwhelming.

Two Iranian warships set sail Tuesday for the Atlantic Ocean on their navy's first-ever mission there, state TV reported.

The voyage comes amid an ongoing push by Iran to demonstrate the ability to project power across the Middle East and beyond.

The report said that the destroyer Sabalan and the logistic helicopter carrier Khark will be dispatched on a three-month voyage.

Sabalan (in Persian سبلان) is a British-made Vosper Mark V-class (or Alvand-class) frigate in the Iranian Navy.

Commissioned in June 1972 as part of a four-ship order, the Sabalan was originally named IIS Rostam, after Rostam, a legendary hero in the Shahnameh, but was renamed after the Islamic revolution for Sabalan, the Iranian mountain.
