TonyE Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 While the colour of the sub might look odd at first it does have a fairly logical explanation since it is a coastal sub, but this is another thing that is lost to the journos.
Archie Pellagio Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 (edited) Submarine camouflage is generally counterintuitive - looking at a periscope or snort depth submarine painted black in anything smoother than the north Atlantic is about as obvious as a cockroach on a white rug. Indeed, in the calm shallow blue waters of the gulf that color makes perfect sense. I suspect its rather easy to 'see' an LA class if you happen to be over it and know where to look.
mnm Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 Seems fine if what they want is to torpedo the Seychelles.

Olof Larsson Posted December 1, 2012 Posted December 1, 2012 Well, since they Iranians call a light frigate a destroyer, it's probably the size of an Iranian frigate. Well, the Jamaran is certainly closer to being a destroyer than the Zumwalts...

Gerard35 Posted December 2, 2012 Posted December 2, 2012 I don't see any problem with Iran sending warships to cruise off the US coast. We cruise off theirs. Just got to be sure to get a valid mail address from them first, for the US Coast Gaurd to send the invoices to, after having to recover half their ships / people. Regards, Gerard

A quick google shows this thing is a (at most) 1100-ton corvette of the US PF103 design. A bit underwhelming. http://www.uskowioniran.com/2013/06/overhauled-irins-bayandar-corvette.html Edited June 12, 2013 by baboon6
shep854 Posted June 12, 2013 Posted June 12, 2013 Maybe they're going 100-year Retro. Still, par for the very short Iranian course.

R011 Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 An Iranian WW2 hero?Yeah I was wondering about that... It seems he was the commander of the Iranian Navy killed in action when the British invaded in 1941. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anglo-Soviet_invasion_of_Iran#British_Invasion_of_Khuzestan
X-Files Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 (edited) Two Iranian warships set sail Tuesday for the Atlantic Ocean on their navy's first-ever mission there, state TV reported. The voyage comes amid an ongoing push by Iran to demonstrate the ability to project power across the Middle East and beyond. The report said that the destroyer Sabalan and the logistic helicopter carrier Khark will be dispatched on a three-month voyage. http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/report-iran-send-warships-atlantic-21606079 Sabalan (in Persian سبلان) is a British-made Vosper Mark V-class (or Alvand-class) frigate in the Iranian Navy.Commissioned in June 1972 as part of a four-ship order, the Sabalan was originally named IIS Rostam, after Rostam, a legendary hero in the Shahnameh, but was renamed after the Islamic revolution for Sabalan, the Iranian mountain.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iranian_frigate_Sabalan Edited January 22, 2014 by X-Files
