Iran says could deploy navy near U.S. coast: report

TEHRAN — Iran raised the prospect on Tuesday of sending military ships close to the United States' Atlantic coast, in what would be a major escalation of tensions between the long-standing adversaries.

"Like the arrogant powers that are present near our marine borders, we will also have a powerful presence close to American marine borders," the head of the Navy, Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari said, according to the official IRNA news agency.

Speaking at a ceremony marking the 31st anniversary of the start of the 1980-1988 war with Iraq, Sayyari gave no details of when such a deployment could happen or the number or type of vessels to be used.

The declaration comes just weeks after Turkey said it would host a NATO early warning radar system which will help spot missile threats from outside Europe, including potentially from Iran. The decision has angered Tehran which had enjoyed close relations with Ankara.

And it comes a few months after Iran sent warships through the Suez canal, after the fall of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, the first time the Islamic Republic had deployed navy vessels in the Mediterranean.

The United States and Israel have not ruled out military action against Iran if diplomacy fails to stop it getting nuclear weapons. Tehran denies it is developing nuclear arms saying its atomic program is for purely peaceful purposes.

Iran has dismissed the threats, warning that it will respond by hitting U.S. interests in the Gulf and Israel if any such attack happened.

Analysts say Tehran could retaliate by launching hit-and-run strikes in the Gulf and by closing the Strait of Hormuz, the waterway where about 40 percent of all traded oil passes.

The Islamic state often launches military drills in the country to display its military capabilities amid persistent speculation about a possible U.S. or Israeli strike on Iran's nuclear facilities.

They're welcome to come do a port visit. We'll even tow em to the port after they fuck up their UNREP and run out of fuel off our coast. I'm sure the USN or some private concern can work up a fee schedule for the fuel and towing cost.

I would interpret this as being a single frigate based for a few months in Venezuela and maybe doing a few freedom of navigation exercises in Cuban territorial and international waters.

Whoop-dee-doo, probably end up being the only Iranian ship that would survive the war if one ever broke out...

From 2006.

A Pentagon assessment of the U.S. capability to defend the homeland against incoming enemy cruise missiles has found what it calls “capability gaps” that may not be solved until 2015. As a result, the Air Force's directorate of operational capability requirements is leading a Joint Capabilities Integration and Development System study “to determine the best approaches for mitigating high-risk joint gaps in the [Homeland Air and Cruise Missile Defense of North America] mission area,” according to an Aug. 9 request for information posted on Federal Business Opportunities.

Pentagon and Missile Defense Agency officials increasingly are concerned with the threat of terrorists using a cargo ship to fire cruise and ballistic missiles just off U.S. shores but outside its territorial waters.

Yeah, Sadly, I think, we're going to have to take a missile or three before we get a clue on this defense of US waters/airspace problem.

What would a 2015 like Nike Zeus infrastructure around the US coast look like today?

PAC-3s in hardstands? SM-2s in fixed positions with SPY-3 directors interspersed? With some 5"/54s for closer in DP functionality and 30mm point defense?

Cant you detain them all for straying inside US waters. Comeon, you know you want to. ^_^

You want us to arrest them and dump em in your embassy grounds? :o ^_^

I think it would be a good idea to mock the Iranians into deploying a real naval inventory far from home.

Bluster is cheap, a blue water navy is not.

Are you imagining an Admiral Rozhestvensky-ish sort of long distance debacle?

Nope, normal operations aught to drain off some good amount of research funding, plus provide a source for all manner of tactics study on our part. Besides, our killer subs need something to play with... might as well give em a home port call every couple of weeks while they work to maintain skills

Starting design is easy; a pencil and scrap of paper--it's the other end of the process that gets a bit tricky (and expensive). Maybe someone could "leak" the plans of our procurement processes. That would suck money from their nuke programs like nobody's business!

A lot more then upping the budget for the Coasties and having them search every ship out to a thousand miles. Its not really practical to defend against a BGM-109 type weapon in a container, and unfortunately with GPS its depressingly easy to make something in this weapon class now adays. The PRC certainly produces something like this, and I believe even Iran has something in the 100-200 mile range.

Iran doesn't know that the way forward is to send party boats with hot Iranian chicks hosting just outside territorial waters?

IME, you're not going to get hot Iranian chicks further than 10 miles from upscale shopping malls. Most image-concious immigrants I know of in LA, which has 'em all.
