Ivanhoe
I've recently learned of a company called Red Right Hand, Inc. that makes AR-15 uppers with heat dissipation mechanisms for the barrel and gas tube. The idea being to have a direct impingement upper that can handle sustained fire (including full auto) better. I'm a little skeptical, but could be interesting. Ivanhoe
2 hours ago, shep854 said: Water cooled ARs? AFAICT, just heat sinks for barrel and gas tube. There is something weird about their gas tube setup, if I understand correctly. Like its a straight gas tube rather than the conventional dogleg shape. Requires a proprietary tube gas block, of course. I suppose the reason is to ensure the barrel heat sink can run all the way from the barrel nut to the gas block, and reduces heat transfer from the barrel to the tube. Once you commit to the above, it would be tempting to use a much heavier gas tube. And maybe nitride it. Can't remember where, but someone somewhere said that on conventional ARs, you don't want a nitrided gas tube. The system is purportedly designed to use gas tube failure to break the action and stop the pewpew, vs breaking the barrel and losing fingers. Aside from Mad Max scenarios, the use case is unclear. It might actually be a Good Thing for the military, but they'll probably never go for it. And in a Mad Max scenario, there are no trash haulers flying to your battle to drop off more party favors, so ammo conservation would seem to be critical. The M240/M249 combination should take care of the needs of the military.

It doesn't work in carbines with gov't profile barrels, though; the barrel lets go first. Edited May 22 by shep854
