Mk 1 Posted August 22, 2011 Posted August 22, 2011 I have received a most unusual request on another forum, for help from a young scout: To: Mk 1 Posted: Sun Aug 21, 2011 7:50 pm Subject: Question Sir, I am planning an Eagle Project to advance to the rank of Eagle in the Boy Scouts. My project I am planning is restoring an M60 tank. It is an old memorial, which has been vandalized. It is a memorial to all those who have fought and are currently engaged in defending the U.S. I was hoping if you would be able to where I can find glass panes for the front viewing port, and the commander's cupola, as well as others. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. Not sure why he chose me, other than that I seem to talk a lot about tanks. So ... I thought I might open up the question to the the TankNet bretheren who actually know a lot about tanks. I can hardly refuse the request for help -- this young fellow and his task seem more than worthy of an investment of my time. Anyone got a lead or two they could provide? Thanks, -Mark 1

Thanks, -Mark 1 You might try having him contact the local Guard MATES facility or its equivalent. The m60 series has been out of production and service for some time and parts are scarce. They might have some contacts that could be of help. Maybe Fellow at Ft. Knox(whats his name)
Guest JamesG123 Posted August 22, 2011 Posted August 22, 2011 Failing that, its always possible to "repair" broken vision blocks with plate glass or peices of acrylic sheet to the right size. Chip out a broken layer of glass, paint the back of the replacement black, and then epoxy it in place. Its a static display after all.

Nope, you can't refuse. When some young person comes along and restores some of your faith in some of today's youth, you have to reinforce it. It's in the rules, somewhere. Good on ya'.

Thanks, -Mark 1 Define the term "restore." Restore exterior only (static flower bed ornament?).? Restore exterior and turret interior for viewing only (the kiddies and Walts will love it!)? Restore to driveable condition (now you're talking!) or is it only for static display? Restore exterior, engine, transmission, and turret interior all to mission-capable status?
