The externally visible differences are in your link. 8 KMT mounts vs 4 KMT mounts, radiation lining, a 3rd stowage box at 7 o'clock. Of course, a lot of images from the Syrian conflict are too blurry or otherwise unsuited to see such details. "T-72AV" however is just the general nomer for all T-72 tanks with the wedge shaped Kontakt-1 array.

I have been using the link below to identify the T-72 versions used in Lybia. T-72AV are identified because of ERA tiles, but how can you tell that they are not T-72M1 + ERA?

Actually export T-72M with ERA was called T-72M-1M, but the syrians were modernized to AV standart.

Only external fuel tanks cough fire, if they had any support and fire extinguisher tank would be perfectly salvageable.Inserted picture near the end shows tank not burning and in OK condition, it was probably blown up later.

One hell of a video. T-62 gets hit by an IED, rolls down a hill while on fire, but the crew still manages to jump out and escape.

Quite surprised the ammunition didn't cook off and destroy the entire tank.

From the looks of it the fire was fully external. The tank was probably hit on the sponsons and the unprotected fuel tanks there were lit up. The engine and the interior of the tank don't seem to have been affected until after the crew abandoned it. It appears that in the end the ammo did cook off. We can see a bright flash and hear a loud explosion near the end.

The explosion seems at lot faster than other ammo cook-off's I've seen videos of. Perhaps that was the demolition charge to render it unserviceable?

I thought ammo as well. Perhaps the tank was almost out of ammo when it was hit?

Well, the flash only occurred once but after that there's this sound that's kinda like thunder or a very rapid set of low rumbles. Maybe there was one big explosion of a lot of ammo stored in one place, then followed by a chain of very rapid explosions of the rest. Either that or the tank was running mostly empty, which does make sense as they were mostly used as bunker busters and mobile pillboxes against an infantry force.

BTW, I'm actually surprised at the lack of kickass technicals from the Syrian conflict. Where are the BMP-turreted Hiluxes?

I think the last loud explosion sounded like a RPG being launched at the now abandoned T-62. Kind of suicide sending tanks in MOUT without a coordinated infantry back-up.

BTW- Can anyone design a software that would mute the sound anytime a "Allahu Akbar" is chanted and I say this knowing that about 95% of the dialogue on these rebel videos are "Allahu Akbar".

At 2:50 I'm pretty sure that's just wind on the camera microphone

True, that makes a lot of sense

Either that was a remotely operated camera or the operator was nutz. A very interesting angle, tho. If I saw that, I'd be trying hard to be somewhere else!

I'd say remotely operated. Human would flinch, even if camera would be on tripod..so it'd show.

I think the lack of chanting of God is Great pretty much signifies it was remote operated.

Good one! I hit mute when it came up, so I missed that clue. :P

Looks to me like he got a nice hit on the pick-up. Hard to tell through the smoke, but it appears the tank was only scorched.
