Not a tank, but Syrian (presumably):

DShK heavy machine gun + wheelbarrow = Mobile artillery

This photo was posted on what I am told is the Syrian Revolution facebook page. The machine gun pictured is the 12.7×108mm DShK.

The DShK was the Soviet WWII equivalent of the Browning M2. Its 12.7×108mm cartridge is very similar in size and power to the .50 BMG. During WWII the Soviets mounted the DShK on trailers with two wheels which could be hitched to a truck or tractor, which seems like it would be easier to maneuver than a one-wheels wheelbarrow.

Did they think about recoil? With a little ingenuity they could have made the handle-bars fold into the ground for stability.

Its looks it was an RF-4 and the Syrian gov has apologized to the Turkish one which accepted the apology, which is now denied by Ertogan.

Its been 8 hours since the event and no hard facts are out still.

That's probably not as cost effective as sandbags on the back legs.

I wonder if the Syrians thought it was a Israeli RF-4E. Shooting down a Zionist recon plane on Syrian airspace would score a coup for Assad. Capturing alive two Zionists airmen even better. Think of the exchanges that would bring Assad prestige in Arab world. I would love to have seen Bashar's and the Syrian AD commander when they found out it was a Turkish Phantom....

Doesn't mean their ADA folks knew the specifics of what the aircraft was or if they believed what it's true nationality was....How good is soviet ADA radar at determining the geometry of an aircraft?

The battery commander was an old salt and had flashbacks when they were IDed as Phantoms....

The tracks they showed on Jazeera made for very odd pathing, like a series of race tracks. I wonder if they were an ELINT run, since the initial penetration was deepest, designed to stir the nest and the other ones being shorter and ostensibly just outside Syrian airspace.

I want to know how radar can see paint colour since it was "clearly marked", this was clearly a provocation.  Let's see how this plays out.

Looks like the wind sensor and gunner sight is the same like T-72M4CZ

Yes, but no panoramic sight for commander. Looks like thouse modernized syrian tanks are finally sighted.

  • 2 weeks later...

IMO no. Another IED probably. Tanks also have ERA and at 0:55 you hit on ERA.

Well it's not quite clear to distinguish if tanks have ERA tiles on, though we've seen Syrian T72s with ERA.

But as Bojan said the big explosion comes from an IDE, doesn't it?

Checking the video.

Could the first tank that was hit, go over a mine. There was another tank before it that drove without being attacked, and it would make more sense to disable the first tank to block the path. It even looks like the tank went over a little earth mound where the mine/IED was hidden.

The other tank seemed to be hit by a RPG in the side armor of the turret. As for the massive explosion the video is weird...it just slow motions to a giant ball of fire as it if was photoshoped or something.

Firt explosion is standard AT mine under 3rd roadwheel. Looks like mantle cover cought fire somehow as after effect...

Shower of sparks during hit (it apears it hit front turret, where right SGD ckyster is) seems to be from L-4 searchlight falling apart.

Final explosion looks quite suspicious.
