swerve
Why the heck do they still have snorkels attached to the side of the turrets? How many rivers would the syrians have to cross if they decided to invade a nearby country?Depends on who they decide to invade. Maybe they're getting ready to cross the Tigris & Euphrates. Galen.Wright
I rarely see any kind of distinct unit insignia on Syrian armor, so this shot of a 2S1(?) on their way to Homs recently may give some sort of indication what unit it currently headed to prepare the city with artillery for the inevitable clearance operation that will commence when the cease-fire is officially cancelled. No idea what the symbol's actually mean though. Edited June 4, 2012 by Galen.Wright
Simon Tan
Whaddya mean cancelled? It's on like donkey kong and the Syrian armor is taking a shellacking.
Galen.Wright
Well, the situation is changing, quite literally, as we speak, but the army has nominally adheared to the cease-fire over the past two months or so by halting really intensive clearance operations involving heavy armor, sustained artillery barrage, massed troops, the sort of thing that draws a lot of media attention. This was right after they had just cleared out a number of insurgent strongholds like Homs, so I have no doubt that Damascus felt they could afford the 'pause' in order to buy time internationally. During this time I don't think any of the heavy loyalist divisions or brigades have been deployed in any offensive strategic manner. Sure there's been clashes, especially over the last week or so when the insurgents have been forced into really stepping up their attacks on security forces in the wake of Houla, but until now we haven't seen any real large coordinated actions on the government's part. Of course this means that the troops going into action in Douma and Homs right now have has the better part of the last two months to prepare for this. bojan
Typical propellant fire and aftereffects. But what is a vehicle? At first I was thinking it was a T-72, but looking again it looks wrong for it, more looking like APC (BMP-2?) but shape still looks wrong), in which case it was probably loaded with a lot of ammo.As for cause it looks like EFP bottom attack mine. Can't say for sure, but it looks bit like it was a wheeled vehicle. I don't think it is a BTR-60-80 as turret is IMHO too small and too far at the front. Did Russians supply Syrians with BMP-3? Sardaukar
I think it was side hit by RPG etc. which detonated ammo...but hard to tell.
Galen.Wright
It looks like a T-XX with the turret facing backwards; the shadow of the adjacent building obscures it somewhat, but you can see the main-gun pan into view at the same instant it gets hit (~0:02). After it starts cooking-off, there's also a huge plume of smoke coming out of the barrel (~0:05) Edited June 7, 2012 by Galen.Wright
purberry416
It's just a T-72 with its turret traversed to 6 o'clock.
Rod
For it looks like it was hit with a powerful RPG (RPG-29) and penetrated armor. If T-72 it donated the ammo in the autoloader causing catastrophic explosion.
bojan
Yes but everyone that I talked with who witnessed one said this is far from common.I still think it was mine, look at small puff of smoke that apears first then flash then main explosion smoke - that is how eg. TMRP-6 works, small charge blows top of mine and soil, then main charge activates and punches steel plate EFP into a tank belly.
