Simon Tan Posted November 12, 2012 Posted November 12, 2012 I ws thinking of another with member of the OIC also known to have participated in previous arming initiatives but I'll take Qatar for $50.
crazyinsane105 Posted November 13, 2012 Posted November 13, 2012 The Syrian Army uses Steyr bolt action rifles so maybe its not that far of a possibility that they also have Augs in their inventory. As for how well Assad's forces are doing...considering that it took nearly seven months of air strikes to force Gaddafi's joke of an army to collapse, I think that Assad's army is doing significantly better. From the videos I've seen, the regular army seems to be much better equipped in terms of just about everything (with a number of units having rails and scopes mounted to their rifles and machine guns). And so far they haven't felt the need to use their heavier weapons (MRLS, Scuds, WMDs). Not saying they are going to win this fight, but it's going to be a long and nasty conflict. I'm still curious as to why the vast number of Syrian soldiers still haven't defected. Within the first few days of the Libyan conflict, the entire army almost immediately split between pro and anti Gadaffi. With the majority of Syrian soldiers being Sunni, I wonder why they haven't decided to simply defect with their weapons. It's one thing to be facing rag tag soldiers, quite another to have several divisions worth of troops (and armor) barreling towards Damascus.
Simon Tan Posted November 13, 2012 Posted November 13, 2012 Bashar took measures after Gadaffi got into trouble to make sure his commanders were loyal. Many of them are beholden to him and not of the Old Guard of Hafez who have been sidelined. Indeed many of these measures were instigated after 2003.....he realised that the Saddam 'methodology' was hollow. Behind the shabiha, there needed to be an organized force.
Jim Warford Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 A few more pics from Syria and one from the outside, looking in: Syrian Army T-72 TURMS-T KO: The same T-72 TURMS-T: A rebel forces T-55AMV: Israeli Merkava Mk 4 on the Syrian border...one of the best Merkava Mk 4 pics I've seen:
Gavin-Phillips Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 That is a very nice picture of the Merkava MkIV! A couple of days back, the free paper reported that Israeli forces had responded to what could/might have been mortar fire coming over the border by destroying an armoured vehicle. I never did hear any more details about this either in the papers as a followup or on the TV which is a little surprising really. Is it known how many T-55AMV's there are/were in Syria?
Tomi Sarvanko Posted November 16, 2012 Posted November 16, 2012 Rebel BMP1 gun cam. Shoot and scoot.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gA8hkpiC-X4
Exel Posted November 17, 2012 Posted November 17, 2012 (edited) Interesting that they drive the BMP backwards towards the threat. I guess it makes for faster acceleration when 'scooting' out. Although the driver is so slow to react that it doesn't make much difference. They expose their entire flank coming around that corner, rather than cutting into the corner... EchoFiveMike Posted November 17, 2012 Posted November 17, 2012 They fight like some of the goofs on WoT. Did they actually hit anything? I didn't see or hear any of the fired rounds detonating. S/F....Ken M
rmgill Posted November 17, 2012 Posted November 17, 2012 It's a civil war....in the middle east.....between different sects..... Bah, that was a Hazimi, they are nothing.
shep854 Posted November 17, 2012 Posted November 17, 2012 How many times does it take popping out at the same spot before the Other Guy just lays his gun and waits, slack taken up on the trigger???
Exel Posted November 17, 2012 Posted November 17, 2012 How many times does it take popping out at the same spot before the Other Guy just lays his gun and waits, slack taken up on the trigger??? If there's a tank on the other side. But popping up and out would give some protection from slower threats like ATGMs and RPGs. That is, if the driver wasn't so hopelessly slow.
shep854 Posted November 17, 2012 Posted November 17, 2012 Admittedly, that BMP didn't seem to have many options. Hopefully, they were co-ordinating with other assets to divide enemy attention.
Exel Posted November 17, 2012 Posted November 17, 2012 Admittedly, that BMP didn't seem to have many options. Hopefully, they were co-ordinating with other assets to divide enemy attention. Yeah. But they could have cut into the corner front first, so that only the front would be exposed to the enemy (as opposed to the fuel tanks and the entire side). The driver could have also reversed out of that position as soon as the cannon fired, so as to minimize time of exposure to the enemy.
shep854 Posted November 17, 2012 Posted November 17, 2012 Those little touches really can pay big dividends--like surviving.
Tomi Sarvanko Posted November 21, 2012 Posted November 21, 2012 Sniping optics. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6YRCgPxsyY
EchoFiveMike Posted November 21, 2012 Posted November 21, 2012 Those guys suck and I want them all to die. I'd love to take a platoon over there; it'd probably feel like murdering the handicapped, but holy Jebus do they suck at everything. S/F....Ken M
Simon Tan Posted November 21, 2012 Posted November 21, 2012 The FAL guy had OK barricade technique while shooting at a MBT......
LeoTanker Posted November 21, 2012 Posted November 21, 2012 They fight like some of the goofs on WoT. Did they actually hit anything? I didn't see or hear any of the fired rounds detonating. S/F....Ken M IMHO he hit the target at least twice. From min 3.45 an on you can clearly see the target (that controll tower looking building to the far right, me thinks) is set ablaze if you look closely. Clownish vid. with clownish ppl (including the mandatory "Allah u akhbars" ) as usual of course -but I get a feeling that the gunner isnt all that bad actually. I have no personal experience with BMP-1 so I couldnt say a how easy a job it is to hit a target at that distance -while under incoming MG fire- with an antiquated 73 mm gun and iron (?) optics. Perhaps some of our Finnish friends could help us out here? I know I have never scored a hit with 84 mm Carl Gustav at that range though, thats for sure. (And CG is a very accurate weapon). Excel? Tomi?
Exel Posted November 21, 2012 Posted November 21, 2012 No experience on Soviet stuff apart from small arms. And the MG turret on MT-LBv, which was... an interesting contraption. I've seen BMP-2s in live fire drills and they can be pretty accurate (not to mention loud and scary as fuck) even with high ROF. The BMP-1 is probably much less so.
Rod Posted November 22, 2012 Author Posted November 22, 2012 That's one of the reasons the Syrian Army is losing. Where is the infantry to support the armor, especially in MOUT? A few trained soldiers on the ground could have directed the tank to fire at the source of sniper fire. You would think that after fighting Israel in 67, 73 and 82 they would have some experienced NCOs. One possible reason is that the Syrian Army has been gutted by defections or the fear of defections (keep them at the bases). Sniping optics.
urbanoid Posted November 22, 2012 Posted November 22, 2012 Don't think so, I guess that in Syrian Army (and other Arab militaries) it's the officers that have to do what in the West would be left to the NCO's.

If they operate like the Soviets used to, it's an extremely hierarchical system where the rank and file are left with very little if any initiative of their own. Everything has to be ordered by officers, literally everything. It's a system that breeds complacency and passivity throughout the organization, which partly explain why Soviet-trained forces have always had such a dismal combat record against Western forces, man for man.
