Whummmmmmmmmmmm Bacon.

Would you buy a bacon sundae? Burger King is betting you will.

The fast-food chain famous for the Whopper will introduce the limited-time dessert on Thursday as part of its new summer menu. The 510-calorie sundaevanilla soft serve topped with fudge, caramel, bacon crumbles and a piece of baconhas 18 grams of fat and 61 grams of sugar.

Earlier this year, Burger King rolled out an expanded menu with healthier farefruit smoothies, wraps and saladswith an advertising campaign featuring soccer star David Beckham. The bacon sundae, available through Sept. 3, would seem to be a strategic move in the polar opposite directionand something akin to Jack in the Box's 1,081 calorie bacon milkshake, which debuted in February.

It also seems to be an attempt to answer Taco Bell's wildly popular Doritos Locos Taco, which became "the most successful product launch in the chain's history" after 100 million were sold in the 10 weeks following its launch in March.

Taco Bell, for its part, is going "upscale." The "Cantina Bell" menu debuting in July, according to Advertising Age, will have "fresh ingredients such as black beans, 'fire-roasted' corn salsa, cilantro rice, pico de gallo and citrus- and herb-marinated chicken that many consumers have come to associate with Chipotle," another restaurant chain.

Burger King's summer menu also includes a Memphis pulled-pork BBQ sandwich, Carolina BBQ Whopper or chicken sandwich, Texas BBQ Whopper or chicken sandwich, sweet potato fries and frozen lemonade.

The bacon sundae, it's worth noting, is downright healthy compared to the Krispy Kreme bacon cheeseburgera 1,500-calorie behemoth that replaces the buns with doughnuts.

Yep. Means they've been cleaned.

If anyone is still wondering, just think about what sausage meat is wrapped in. :)

Bacon...

A subject near and dear to my heart.

My favorite bacon is a brand we discovered at Sam's Club. It is about a 1/4" thick and is maple-flavored. The whole house smells like bacon for days after my wife cooks it for breakfast. People stop by just to stand outside and catch a wiff of the aroma. The labrador just sits in the living room and drools while we eat breakfast when we have maple-flavored bacon. After breakfast, we pour the grease from the bacon over his dog food...he can and will eat an entire bowl of dog food without stopping.

We use whatever garden variety bacon is on sale to wrap shrimp in before barbecuing on the grill. We use about 3 or 4 different barbecue sauces for more variety. My neighbor from across the cul-de-sac walked over once to inquire about what smelled so good. I don't know what inspired him to walk over...the variety of sauces, the bacon or the shrimp, but he seemed happy with the samples we gave him.

For BLTs my wife will only use Kunzler's bacon.

My wife and son eat crumpled up bacon on salads and baked potatoes.

I'm not very picky and I like to save a penny or two so I tend to buy bacon ends and pieces. Its jut the scrap from when they trim the bacon to make it uniform for packaging. Tastes just as good, but is usually about half the price. I also like fresh side, which is just a cut of bacon that has not been cured yet.

If you like bacon you will love chicharrón. It is a chunk of uncured pork belly deep fried and served hot. It tastes like bacon, pork tenderloin, and pork rinds all in one.

I'm kinda over bacon, I still like it but I've probably had it less than 10 times this year and that was mostly the sad little transparent threads of vaguely smoke flavored stuff that passes for bacon at hotel breakfasts. At home when I get the urge for something smokey with breakfast I use smoked salmon. Since I smoke my own it's not terribly expensive, I try to stock up when I notice salmon on sale at Costco. It freezes pretty well and it's a heck of a lot faster to cook.

Once in a while, but since I rarely eat it any more and I'm pretty happy with the bacon I can get from the store or if I feel like splurging by ordering from Burger's Smokehouse or the Amana Meat Shop I've never bothered to try. I hot smoke my salmon and started because it saves a fairly decent amount of money.
