C.G.Erickson Posted August 9, 2010 Posted August 9, 2010 Does anyone know where I can find reloading data on the Lapua produced Scenar 250 grain bullet HPBT? For the 338 TRG 42. Things like Overall length? Powder charge for 2,800 fps using 4831sc?

C.G.Erickson Posted August 10, 2010 Author Posted August 10, 2010 (edited) Thanks guys Seems my home PC downloads the site. So now have cartridge length,Overall Length, but still searching for Hodgdon 4831sc info. Still have time as I am still building gun. Precision mounted a Warner Rail, TRG Bi-pod, and Muzzle Brake. And as I am a bit of a Pussy, am looking to how to mount a Mercury Recoil Reducer into the stock. May be able to put it into the removeable cheek stock. Scope will be a custom built US Optics SN-3 3.8 to 22 mag with a custom built reticle. Once again Guys....Thanks C.G. Edited August 10, 2010 by C.G.Erickson
EchoFiveMike Posted August 10, 2010 Posted August 10, 2010 This is off Hodgdon's site: 250 GR. HDY SP Hodgdon H4831 .338" 3.550" 79.0 2600 46,100 CUP 85.0 2740 52,200 CUP Same data as the long cut. Starting load is 79.0, max is 85.0. Do you have a chronograph? Scenar data shouldn't be too different than any other data. I'd start my OAL seating the bullet right at the lands or max magazine length, whichever is shorter. Do you have a Stony point OAL tool? S/F.....Ken M
C.G.Erickson Posted August 10, 2010 Author Posted August 10, 2010 Thanks Echo Noticed a difference between Lapua OAL and Hornady OAL. Scenar OAL is listed at 3.681, Hornady at 3.550. Makes a difference in CUP Pressure. Got a chrono. No Chamber Gage. Question, How do you seat a spire point against Lands? Tried that with my 223 varmint gun and gave up.(Changed velocity as bullet seat depth allowed more expansion room and thus less pressure for same amount of powder.) Ruger Engineer told me not to go over spec. C.G.

Ruger Engineer told me not to go over spec. C.G. I've used a dummy round (no primer or powder) for any particular bullet and marked the outside with a Magic Marker (bullet must be completely dry, obviously) and increased seating depth until lands made no visible impressions. I crank the bullet plunger another half turn, just to be sure. In effect, you are building your own gauge, which is tailored to your piece. This is really easy on a bolt action, a bit more of a hassle on an autoloader. P.S. Working up loads in anything with new bullets, I like to disassemble the arm and fit test rounds to chamber by hand. Works with handguns and long guns and you won't get that extra leverage from a bolt or slam fit in autoloader. Edited August 10, 2010 by Doug Kibbey
