Mk 48 Mod kits for the Netherlands

Recommended Posts

I know there's probably a lot I'm not taking into consideration, but doesn't $150 million to modify 40 torpedoes seem a bit steep?:

Going from the Mk48/4 to the Mk48/7 is like getting a new torpedo: the ADCAP modifications are huge, not minor upgrades. Also you can't tell how much is the torpedoes vs. the support and even modifications to the subs themselves (backdoor funding for submarine fire control improvements is always a possibility).

Still, you're probably right: these are probably just wildly over-priced.

According to wiki a Walrus class sub can carry 20 mk.48s. Maybe they have a mix on board of ''old'' torpedos and 10 ''new'' torpedos?

We only have 4 subs...

Regards

Or, the subs on deployment swap their torpedoes with the subs at the pier leaving the latter with an empty torpedo room... Means less torpedoes "needed" and it's cheaper, always a good selling point to you Dutchies :D

Reminds me of a time when they needed to pull Harpoons off RAN ships when they wanted the RAAF to fire one ;)

Thankfully I believe those days are over. :)

Well, RAAF planes cannot launch RAN Harpoons and vice-versa. The RGM-84 has folding wings and a booster; they are housed in a sealed fiberglass container and they are not supposed to be taken off except for major overhaul. The AGM-84 version has fixed wings, no booster and are designed for air launch. They come in big boxes and aren`t supposed to be surface launched.

I wouldn`t be surprised if Holland only has 40 Mk48 torpedoes. Modern torpedoes are very expensive and only in a most desperate cause something like 40 weapons would be fired. For example, Spain has purchased a number of DM2A4 torpedoes which is far lower than total theorical carrying number (40 weapons for four subs with a capability of 18-20 weapons). Have in mind that in a force of four subs, most probably one will be in deep overhaul, another and maintenance and two operational at a given time. Two operational subs mean a total of 40 torpedoes. Does the number ring? :P
