Fritz
I saw Con Air last evening, hadn't seen it before. Was entertaining, exactly the kind of movie I needed.
Doug Kibbey
Just saw the 2005 release of Sam Peckinpah's "Pat Garret & Billy the Kid." Very deep movie. The soundtrack sometimes comes out of nowhere, but it's a heartbreaker when "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" plays. That scene finally explains what that song is about. Had to put subtitles on, I'm too much of a slicker to understand western talk. One of my top five favorite westerns*. The scene with Slim Pickens and Katy Jurado is incredibly moving. In no particular order, the other four: "McCabe and Mrs. Miller""Hombre""The Grey Fox""Lonely Are the Brave"

Doug Kibbey
Gonna have to check those out. See "McCabe" first. It's a Robert Altman picture so it's all about characters (eccentric characters). Funny and sad all at the same time. And one of the best adaptations of an existing artist's (Leonard Cohen) work to film ever. In the top three in that regards (with "Harold and Maude"..also an Altman film...and Mike Nichols', "The Graduate") As Leonard Maltin put it, the one word to describe the town is "grungy". It certainly is. Richard Farnsworth was never better than in "The Grey Fox". And it's even a CANADIAN film! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihG8vpfz1Yc Edited May 31, 2010 by Doug Kibbey
Corinthian
Uhm... let's see... Google Maria Ozawa and F1. Even in my standards, it's still a "my eyes the goggles do nothing" thing. scj1014
I saw Iron Man 2 this weekend..not very good,IMHO. Not well written or even well-acted (seemed like most of the cast just sorta went through the motions...kinda like "I'll say my lines and look vaguely interested and you write the check" sorta acting style)...just a special effects extravaganza. The final fight scene with Iron Man and Mickey Rourke's character seemed kinda rushed, like they were trying to just get it over with. I didn't like the fact that Tony Stark was able to "create" a new element in about half an hour or so...I know its just a comic book, but,c'mon guys, let's at least try to make some sort of reasonable solution to a problem,OK? They also used the old film clip of estranged father to explain things he could never say face-to-face gimmick...it gets kind of old after about once. Nobody really does that, do they? I thought the first movie was much better...not great, mind you, just better.
Brad Edmondson
I'm on course and resorting to watching films broken up into ten parts on Youtube. Recent discoveries include: -Silent Running (I swear, I always thought it was a submarine flick!)-Quartermass and the Pit-Scanners-Blue Velvet (I watched this the night before Dennis Hopper died. Coincidence?)-Session
Tommy Bennett
I'm watching one now on SHO2, called Lord of the G-Strings, which I came across quite by accident. It deviates a bit from Tolkien's original epic, but is still oddly compelling. Gotta go, the Throbbits are bedding down for the night...
Jim Martin
Last night watched a sci fi horror flick that was not too bad at all. "Pandorum", starring Dennis Quaid. 2 man rotation shift of a human interstellar colonization ship wakes up from hibernation, ship's systems are all dead, reactor is malfunctioning, memories patchy due to aftereffects of hybernation, shift they're supposed to relieve nowhere in evidence. They try to figure out what's going on, things get gruesome. Starz On Demand has it available for the month. Stargrunt6
Couple of ones I've seen a few months ago: Army of Shadows: This movie is very un-hollywood (huge compliment). It features a way-too-calm protagonist that is middle aged and could be confused for one of your neighbors. Not a whole lot of action, but a lot of tension and suspense. The climactic scene and the finale were incredible. This Sporting Life: Had to rent it because I love all things rugby. It's the British "Streetcar" in my opinion. Very well acted, and depressing. With all the pointless locker room scenes, I assumed the director was gay (and a net search proved me right). The rugby scenes were really cool. Where'd you hear about it? I mean, the broad pantheon of popular rugby movies- why there's Invictus, This Sporting Life, Alive, and. . .

I mean, the broad pantheon of popular rugby movies- why there's Invictus, This Sporting Life, Alive, and. . . I absolutely love the Criterion Classic Collection. I found that one on their website. Eyes lit up when I saw that it was rugby related, even if it's league (ha). Army of Shadows is also Criterion collection, and I plan on renting the director's break-out hit "Le Samourai." Haven't seen Alive yet, but I have seen Invictus. Clint Eastwood is no joke. What was great about that movie was how it showed race relations to not be such a one-sided issue in South Africa. His son should not have contributed to the soundtrack, he's better with sadder themes (eg, the other Clint Eastwood movies he's done).
Tommy Bennett
Alice in Wonderland...I felt like I had taken a stroll into the Mountains of Madness. It was a disturbing view of an unsettling place inhabited by lunatics, some all knowing, and others lost in abandon. Much as the book was intended, but placed in the hands of Tim Burton, who can take a vision of chaos and somehow add another dollop of entropy. The only character that wasn't extroadinary was Anne Hathaway's White Queen. She wasn't the best choice and seemed flailing about amidst brilliant company. Johnny Depp particularly stood out as a man looking into the abyss and back again. I can see where many mightn't care for it, as evidenced by some disparaging reviews I read when it was out, but they even gave Christopher Lee the Jabberwocky - who better? Give me a break, Traci Lords? She's a p0rn queen. But yes, I will likely turn it on tonight, for entertainment/torture value while I play a game or otherwise occupy myself. There is also a major production of same book in the works for 2012, with Lynn Collins (nummy!!!) as Dejah Thoris. Willem Dafoe as Tars Tarkas. And if you wanna reread the books online for free: http://www.gutenberg.org/catalog/world/readfile?fk_files=785498 I haven't read the books since maybe 10/11 years old at the latest; I guess it's time to revisit them. Ivanhoe
Grabbed the DVD of Pathfinder the other day at Walmart, out of the $5 bin. Should have been in the $1 bin. Sadly, wasn't one of those "so bad its funny" kind of movies.

Ofelas, and whoops, it's Norwegian. I really liked it. Not surprised Hollywood screws things up. They make movies that sell, not movies that are good. Nailcreek
Just saw "Get him to the Greek" ... a truely dark, awful and lousy movie. The acting was pretty good, but the story was shallow, narcissitic (sp), vapid and not so good. It was a bad attempt at a comedic buddy movie. It was the equivalent of Animal House's Flounder meets Jim Morrison - without the charm. We wouldn't rent it. Kate went with me and took for the team. Apparently rose are in order. Also ... "The Box" ... TERRIBLE.
