Solo was unprofitable for one reason, and one reason only: Episode 8. TLJ broke the franchise.

No, no, no, no... it's fatigue which hurt Solo. No, wait... it was the May release. Better yet, it was both! :glare:

The amount of disconnect shown by folks at Disney and Lucasfilm is amazing. Makes you wonder how far things have to go for them to realize what's happened. I think Ep. IX will certainly do better than Solo but at what point, with likely much lower numbers than the previous films, will it finally dawn on these mouthbreathers that they destroyed what was one of the most solid franchises in film?

RUMINT says that Disney head wants to fire the Lucasfilm head... but can't find anyone to replace her.

"Disney's head Bob Iger wants to fire Kathleen Kennedy, but there's a problem: No one they're willing to offer the job to is willing to take it. JJ Abrams (Randolph reports) was offered the job, but turned it down flat. "Several" were approached."

Oooooooo... :o

I can understand why no one would want to take over the role. The only way I see to fix this shit-show is say the last 3 films didn't happen and start over. I also imagine that's not a realistic option and they want someone to come in and fix the ship while it's still sailing.

Serious question - how in the world does anyone come in and make Ep. IX good and get all the disgruntled SW fans to come back? I just don't see it.

Its not exactly a movie, buts related: i am enjoying the living shirt out of the show "Hollywood Weapons fact or Fiction" which deals with, duh, gun stunts in movies and TV. The conductor, named Terry Schappert, its a mercurial fellow who manages to flesh the simple lets-shoot-stuff trope with details and background. It has this nice "take our gun fun seriously" approach, no jackassery at all. Give it a shot if you have spare time.

I watched him while I had that part of my cable package; my favorite ep was the Quigley Down Under ep where he went & visited with Tom Selleck who had the original Buffalo Rifle used in 'Quigley'; they were testing to see if a round from said weapon could actually go thru two henchmen at the same time...turns out that such a stunt (two baddies being taken out by one bullet) is actually called a 'Quigley' in the sniper community.

Damn Netflix doesn't have that episodio :(

Unlike comics franchises - or Star Trek - Star Wars is not really set up too well for reboots. Once Ep 9 hits, that is it, story wise. The beloved main characters are anyway done for... They should have used anthology to set up the new main character, do the Marvel thing - give the back story on Poe (lot of space combat yay!), on the new underworld, heck, the casino planet would be a good setup for a heist movie.... Heck, "Old Man Luke" movie would probably work (think Wolverine, but less gore and at the end he ends on the island). Or go full hog on the old Republic era. To be honest... Right now dropping solo movies and focusing on Ep9 and new trilogy seems to be the exactly wrong thing to do.

I don't think TFA and TLJ are going anywhere. And the directing choices. Though given that the artifical time constraint of TLJ is one thing that makes it utterly bonkers (just think if it took place over several weeks instead of one day - it would alo make Leia's come have an actual function. Or Finn's. At the same time it would eliminate a lot of Rey Sue - getting so good over time could work, dropping everything into few hours after TFA was utterly stupid.

I agree. The best move they could do - but have now said to do the exact opposite - is to never make Episode IX and rather concentrate on background films like more Solo and whatnot. The universe is a big place, there's so much undiscovered land both as far as stories and characters are concerned. They could drop the shackles of established canon and convention and concentrate on making good films with good stories rather than doubling down on the trainwreck that they created.

Alas, blinded by liberal ideology and groupthink, they're drawing the wrong conclusions, that the fans are misogynistic and need to be re-eductaed. Good luck with that.

What happens when you kill 3, is that a Super Quigley? :)

In other news, a remake of Blue Thunder is in the works. I cant think why they want to remake that now. :D

The movie or the TV series?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eYP3rYNL3p8

The movie. The story is they are going to have an armed drone instead of a Helicopter, which to my mind is topical, but kind of misses the charm of the original.

I loved the TV series as a Child, but looking back, my God how it sucked. Im not surprised it got canned inside a season. Although Airwolf, Ernest Borgnine aside, was not much better.

Interestingly, I noticed the nude Yoga teacher in the movie is still offering classes, so I guess the film didnt do her career any harm. :D

Same with Knight Rider: cool vehicle, bad stories. Or what was this other one called? Viper I think, the blatant product placement for a certain car from Chrysler.

Though I liked the pilot of Airwolf playing cello by his hut at the lake.

There was also Streethawk, which was entertaining if absurd. Cool tech, silly story.

In fact, thinking on it, most TV series from the US in the 1980's has pretty poor scriptwriting. One possible exception was Tour of Duty, which I really must try and pick up on DVD one of these days. Oh and Miami Vice, though I still think with those cars they must have been on the take. :D

Oh right the motorcycle. That ran on a TV station my family did not have. We were bitter terrestial clingers and thus missed out on these pearls on cable and satellite television. :D I watched it at friend's from time to time.

Miami Vice is noted as the first cop series, that actually has a life outside catching criminals for the characters. a few years ago a rerun started and I watched the pilot for the first time. And damn, that one certainly has movie quality. suits that actually fit and are colour coordinated with the scenery. good music matching the scenes.

1980ies american series, well there are always A-Team and MacGyver! ^_^

Im going to have to get the boxed set. I think its a series that would come out fresh again.

The other good one was The Equalizer. There are few things more full of understated menace than a polite Englishman. :)

Played a large role in the creation of 'Person of Interest' I think.

This clip is the sequel to "Taking of Longyuan Hill". It is an excerpt from "38th Parallel", a Chinese war drama in 2016. It re-enacts one of the bloodiest battles during the first few months after the Chinese military entered Korea War. This clip is the prequel to "Defense of Longyuan Hill". It's an excerpt from the 2016 Chinese war drama, "38th Parallel". The 1st company has infiltrated and seized the strategic location of Longyuan hill. From there, they could block the escape route of UN forces fleeing south from North Korean territory. This would effectively help the main forces of the Chinese People's Volunteer Army to eliminate UN troops.

This segment is based on the Battle of the Ch'ongch'on River that enabled Chinese forces to completely expel UN troops from North Korea: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_...

I have the boxed set of TOD. I enjoyed the series when it was on, and enjoyed re-watching 20+ years later. It definitely doesn't have the polish of current TV, but for the time I think it really raised the bar on milfiction.

Somehow it came up in a discussion with a friend who served 10+ in the Army bending wrenches. He watched it as a little kid, it had some influence on him enlisting.

I remember discussing it at school with a guy just about to leave whom was going to join the Royal Marines, and I think it was a similar case there. Mind you, there was a real fascination with all things Vietnam in the UK in the late 80's, probably a result of Full Metal Jacket and Platoon. Then this came on, which seems to have been very popular despite being on in the middle of the night.

It was a good show. I think a lot of it was due to Terrence Knox, but in truth it was a pretty damn good cast all round.
