Jim Martin Posted November 21, 2010 Posted November 21, 2010 Falken Unmutual. You too, go on The List.
Corinthian Posted November 21, 2010 Posted November 21, 2010 Saw the latest installment of Harry Potter. Again, production-wise, it is better than the previous HP films, but the increasingly annoying tendency of filmmakers to insert "for 3-D viewing" scenes further reinforces my idea that 3-D is a bloody annoying gimmick. Since it's a 2-parter, the first part is obviously a bit dragging. The film also once again makes me remember that that wizard world is highly inefficient and impractical. Highlight was that "raunchy" scene between Evil Harry and Evil Sexy Nude Hermione (in that scene, her CGI equivalent looked like she had bigger boobs - ooooh....)
Fritz Posted November 21, 2010 Posted November 21, 2010 3D is not a "gimmick". It's a tool. That studios use it mostly in a gimmicky fashion is not its fault. It's sad because it could be used for great effect but as usual studios' imaginations prove to be extremely limited. ...how much of nude Hermione do we get to see? It's kids movie, right?
Fritz Posted November 21, 2010 Posted November 21, 2010 A movie any tank-netter will certainly approve of. Army dad gets into a conflict with a particularly evil and tyrannical town sheriff. When the latter goes too far the former takes his own personal M4 Sherman out and proceeds to restore justice.Accompanied by a superhot 20 year old... err tank bunny? who spends most of the movie jumping around with no bra. The sheriff's performance btw is a bit too good for this movie. The first half, before the M4 rolls out, feels like the buildup to a very good suspenseful drama, then it gets progressively more light-hearted. Still good fun. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088224/

Still good fun. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088224/ A truly awful movie with more credibility holes than the Obama administration. James Garner can not be proud of this one. The tank bunny is the only feature worth watching, and there are better ways to get that rush. It's like watching "Christine" just to see Alexandra Paul. Better to just turn the sound down and use the FF button judiciously. Should be able to get through the film in about five minutes. Just watched "Avatar" on the wide screen at home. Completely underwhelming. Cameron has done much better stuff with less computer tech.

Like that scene in HP where they have a meeting. In 3D, it would make the viewer feel they were actually in the meeting, looking over someone's shoulder as if a fly on the wall. Other stuff is more for 'whizbang' effect. IOW, it doesn't enhance the film in anyway. ...how much of nude Hermione do we get to see? It's kids movie, right? Not much, topless but the naughty bits are covered. The kissing scene was quite something (I heard that she kissed like an animal in that scene - ooooh), and with her arms squeezing her chest, it made the side boob view look bigger.
Archie Pellagio Posted November 26, 2010 Posted November 26, 2010 Last night I saw Fair Game which is based around the Valerie Plame incident.I had no intention of watching this one but there was nothing else on and they were having some projector issues with Red Hill, I was bored a bat shit so I figured I'd sit through it and make Sean Penn FAG jokes in my head the whole way through. All I can say is damn was I wrong. It is quite simply the best int themed movie I have ever seen and most amazingly for a movie that a) has douchebag of the century Sean f'cking Penn as Co-Star and b ) is about a pretty unabashedly political incident they managed to keep the whole thing very even keeled, only right at the very, very end is there even a hint of political agenda.
Skywalkre Posted November 26, 2010 Posted November 26, 2010 http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/universal/cowboysaliens/ Like the trailer. Impressive cast. My curiosity is definitely piqued.

Oh, the kissing scene is quite raw. Esp since the context of it (mindscrewing Ron). My thoughts on the movie: well-made, but since I never saw another HP movie since the first one, it reminded me of watching the spanish channel in my non-speaking days. Toy Story 3 is hilarious. I cannot wait for Tron.I can go to my grave never seeing the Green Lantern. It'll be the Fantastic Four all over again.
Nailcreek Posted November 27, 2010 Posted November 27, 2010 Saw "The American" last night. When it finished and the credits rolled there was this chorus of "Fuck that" "What a pile of shit" "Well that was a waste of fucking time" It reminded me a lot of 'Michael Clayton', one of those movies that is well made, dark and introspective, and it would've been great if it had that one little thing, you know, a story... We saw it when it came out ... completely and totally underwhelming. We just thought ... wouldn't even see it again on a "rent one, get one free basis". The set must have been pretty cold during the "bumpin' uglies" scene. His hooker g/f must have left two dimples in the mattress. Even that was a complete waste and not the least mildly arousing. The ending was kinda "aw, comeon" ... a Ruger Mini-14 can't blow a bolt out like that ... They should be forced to give back stars for this one. It was only beaten on the sucko-meter this year by "The Box" - a genuinely terrible, disjointed and pointless cinematic exploitation of paying customers.
AdmiralB Posted November 29, 2010 Posted November 29, 2010 (edited) Saw a movie called Everyman's War on streaming Netflix over the weekend. Low-budget 2009 film done by two brothers about their dad's experience as an infantryman in 94ID in Nennig, Germany as the Ardennes Offensive started. Really well done. Jim Martin Posted November 29, 2010 Posted November 29, 2010 (edited) Just saw two fairly decent movies: Defiance and Daybreakers(yeah I was going down the alphabet on On Demand) Defiance is based on a true story about Jews in Belorussia in WWII, went into the woods to hide from the Germans, joined the Partisans. Wound up saving 1200 Jews by hiding them in the forest, even built a town with a school, hospital and nursery. When Hollywood says "Based on a true story", I suppose it could mean that yes, there were Jews in Belorussia...but they told of the post-war fates of the brothers at the end of the movie, so I guess they did exist. Not bad flick, the German tank in the movie was definitely a vismod, but I couldn't get a good look at it to decide what it was. They don't show full pics of it, probably to hide the vismodding. Daybreakers is your basic horror/action flick. A plague turns the majority of humanity into vampires. Still inhabit the cities, have to use tunnels underground to move about in the daytime, unless they have cars modded for daytime driving. They "farm" the remaining humans for blood, and the human population is running out--crisis time, things get very ugly in the cities. Blood riots as opposed to food riots. The US military is now composed of vampire soldiers whose primary function is the hunting of humans for food. Edited November 29, 2010 by Jim Martin
bojan Posted November 30, 2010 Posted November 30, 2010 (edited) ...Defiance...but they told of the post-war fates of the brothers at the end of the movie, so I guess they did exist... As far as movies go this is ~95% truth. They are a bit "sainted" in the movie, but I guess that true story how every guerrilla operates would be too shocking for audience... ...German tank in the movie was definitely a vismod, but I couldn't get a good look at it to decide what it was...Swiss Pz68, same as in "Enemy at Gates". VISMOD looks a bit like Pz-III, just oversized. Edited November 30, 2010 by bojan
Stargrunt6 Posted November 30, 2010 Posted November 30, 2010 My brother rented "The Expendables." He and my family watched, but most of the time I had my back turned knowing it would be a turkey. From there comments, I gathered I was right. I even asked my brother "Are the action scenes over-edited?" "Yep," he replies. Toy Story 3 was hilarious though. Having a niece lets you watch stuff like that.
TonyE Posted December 4, 2010 Posted December 4, 2010 The Space Battleship Yamato (aka The Starblazers) live action movie premiered in Japan a few days ago, here is a few minuttes from the openingscene, seem to be a battle near Mars between the gamilons and the last surviving earth fleet: http://twitchfilm.com/news/2010/12/watch-the-first-two-minutes-of-yamazakis-space-battleship-yamato.php
bojan Posted December 5, 2010 Posted December 5, 2010 Bah, they should just make Battlefleet Gothic movie... Pre-dreadnought's in space in infinitely better then dreadnoughts in space.
Jim Martin Posted December 5, 2010 Posted December 5, 2010 I tried watching "The Road" on On Demand the other day. On Demand failed about 45 minutes into it, and frankly I was grateful. Horribly dreary, depressing, monotonous, grey. Almost unbearable to watch. The only reason I'd kept hanging on was I wanted to know what the apocalyptic cataclysm was that had ended nearly all life on the planet and left humanity eating each other in the charred ruins? Well I kinda sorta cheated tonight and googled a review of the movie, and it states that the event is never explained. So you have this dead world, with humans reduced to savagery...and the damned movie never explains what the hell happened. Epic fail.

That it's a lonely road, it sucks, is cruel, disappoints, and then you die. The only thing that keeps you going is the vain hope of protecting your child, which you will eventually fail at. And my imagination all saw grey. I quite liked the decision of the author not to explain why the world ended that way. Something different, shows how puny we are.

Also SHMC how they returned fire, and that it did a pretty good job of knocking the good guys around. I await eagerly the arrival of this one to my neck of the woods. Shot

Fritz Posted December 5, 2010 Posted December 5, 2010 I saw Unstoppable on Friday, liked it a lot. Not exceptional, but solid. Based on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CSX_8888_incident
Fritz Posted December 6, 2010 Posted December 6, 2010 Just saw Spy Game by the same director, totally unrealistic ending but overall worth watching. Robert Redford completely steals the show.

That was a fun movie. Until now, I still wonder what they were eating at Beirut. Nachos? Tortillas? Looks yummy.
