Saw trailer for "Let me in", and in the discussion I found out that it's a remake of a Swedish film "Let the right one in". Saw the original, and I must say - it's amazing. It's a story about the relation of two 12 year olds - a bullied boy and a vampire girl. That might seem to be Twilight-ish crap, but it's the exact opposite - slow, atmospheric, dark and very well acted.

Saw the Expendables last night. It was 82 minutes of mediocrity. The script was awful, it was poorly directed and the sound was terrible. If I didn't know better, I'd think it was a Jean-Claude Van Damme film. Stallone was not at his best, to say the least. Randy Couture had a good fight scene but the lighting made it difficult to see which one was doing the fighting. The only scene I liked was when Terry Crews clears out a whole bunch of bad guys with his AA-12 shotgun with a drum magazine, firing frag rounds on full automatic. I should have waited for the film to come out on DVD so I could rent it for $1 at the supermarket Red Box kiosk.

 

It was disappointment, but a good example on how to screw things up. Too many stars with not enough to do for everyone. Bad guys who were not shown doing anything particularly evil. One of the villains had some character development which ended up going nowhere.

 

Last Rambo was simple but effective. There were bad guys who were shown doing various very evil things. Then the hero exalted various gloriously violent vengeance on them. It's not rocket science. By contrast, in Expendables, the goons were foot soldiers of the 2ndary villain who was ambiguous. In fact he gave them a facepaint as an act of defiance towards the main villain of the movie. The heroes then killed around 200 of these ambiguously bad guys. It felt like nothing, and more so as they were shown as totally ineffective.

 

In fact given that the Island's population was mentioned to be only 6000, the heroes undertook a major genocide during the movie...

 

I liked Dolph Lundgren's character, though.

I can already tell you "The Expendables'" biggest flaw without even seeing the movie. It was written and directed by, and stars, real life professional coward Sylvester Stallone.

 

Not gonna waste my cash making the coward richer.

I watched Signs this morning, and while I think The Sixth Sense was Shyamalan's best, I enjoyed this one as well. I was disappointed with pretty much everything else he did, but maybe down the road, his imagination will reward us.

 

I'm watching the director's cut of Aliens, one of my all time favorite films. I just enjoyed the scene with the automated guns running down the ammo counts. The hopelessness of everyone's expressions is clear, but they resolve to fight on. Great stuff!

 

Love Aliens. Has to be one of the best movies ever made. Everything you said +1.

I thought the movie was extremely well done until the last five minutes, when it came perilously close to making me loathe the entire film. It was contrived, manipulative, and was nihilistic simply to be "dark". We're talking Job levels of being screwed with just to make a character that the audience has grown to care about suffer for no story purpose. I outgrew appreciating that crap when I was in my 20's. Until then though it was a great piece of tension-filled horror, turn the DVD off when they exit the parking lot and you have an almost perfect little film.

I ended up not watching it due to belt tightening measures. I guess thank God for electric bills and such for sparing me this waste-of-time flick? Then again, I still think the ground breaking thing in that film is how they fit so many egos in it hehehehe

Watch this. It is quite excellent..... I thought it was better than the Steig Larsson movies.

 

 

ETA:- One of the stars is my favorite Danish actor, Kim Bodnia. I first came across him in Pusher and In China They Eat Dogs, both are excellent movies BTW.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. I read the book and felt it could've been edited by at least fifty pages, and the film did that rather handsomely. I loved one reviewer's comments on the swedish version about how the 'Australia' in the movie looked so much like Spain even the sheep seemed to be baa'ing with a spanish accent

Given the original story ended with them exiting the parking level, the last couple minutes were indeed tacked on just screw with the characters and the audiences.

Wouldn't happened as King and the director wanted to keep taking pot shots at christians when wasn't any need to, with all of the stuff in the mist to provide tension.

Machete was fun. I thought it was a lot better than both Grindhouse films. The plot is straight forward, not that there really needs to be a plot. You get Danny Trejo chopping heads off with big knives. Jeff Fahey did a good job with his character, which kind of made up for DeNiro's awful Texas accent. It's a shame to see one of my favorite actors ruin an accent. One thing has been confirmed; Jessica Alba is very hot.

If you want to see a good rap music parody, do not miss "Fear of a Black Hat". Harder to find, but absolutely side-splitting.

I haven't read the story in probably 25 or so years, but I distinctly recall that in fact the story follows them down the road a ways, including attempting to get gas at a station. It ends off with them talking about hearing a radio transmission from Connecticut, I believe, and hoping to get to the source.

I never read it, just going what other people who read the story commenting on the comparison of it to the movie version.
