Skywalkre
Rogue One was amazing and the best Star Wars film we've ever been given. (Almost makes up having to suffer through the prequels and TFA. I actually feel bad because I doubt Episode VIII can come close to this level.) It basically did everything right. Paid homage to the original trilogy and had countless references that fit in and weren't forced. Shot down all the nerds over the years who have discounted the ending of A New Hope. Made Vader look like even more of a badass than we already knew he was (his final scene was... AWESOME). Made it look, as someone pointed out in a different thread, like there's actually a war going on in the universe. Took Star Wars into both the gray and gritty yet still made it fit perfectly in with the lore. The characters are great. The battle scenes are terrific. The list of positives just goes on and on. About the only complaint I can come up with is the CGI felt off on some of the legacy characters as they chose to try and make them look identical rather than cast similar looking actors. In the end if you're a Star Wars purist/junkie like myself this movie was everything you were hoping for (and nothing of what we were all afraid of and expecting it'd turn out to be). Corinthian
Oh Rogue One... BEST. STAR. WARS. EVER.
Corinthian
They made Darth Vader actually bad ass!!!!! Man, those Vader scenes were awesome! My main complaint is the space battle scenes. C'mon, capital ships that don't fire at each other?!? Meh. Although I positively hated the ship-on-ship combat in Ep.3, still they couldve done a nice fleet battle in Rogue One. Second complaint is the blind guy scenes near the end. OH C'MON! But other than those two complaints... Rogue One is awesome. I really like the story. It makes the Death Star weakness more logical now. Now THAT is how you make a Star Wars film. And y'all know how much I don't really like Star Wars. Best. Star. Wars. Movie. EVER. Stefan Fredriksson
You two praising it certainly didn't lower expectations.Actually thinking of seeing this in a cinema.
Corinthian
Speaking of lowered expectations, unlike some movies where I enter the cinema with lowered expectations, this one I entered with somewhat higher than my usual expectations, i.e., entered the cinema as if I was watching the latest Marvel movie which is somewhat pretty high expectations (for meself). And it exceeded those expectations. It's the story more than anything else really. The effects etc all come second to the story. It succeeded in telling a story, and how it all ties in with the rest of the Star Wars movies. A great bridge between the disastrous prequel trilogy and the original trilogy. Corinthian
Oh yeah. They made the Death Star more terrifying here than the original trilogy. I never really found the Death Star to be impressive in the original trilogy. However, Rogue One changed that. Dammit those destruction scenes were FUCKING AWESOME!!!!!!!!!1!!!!! Corinthian
Best compliment I can give it: I'd be willing to pay to watch it again. Perhaps I should in fucking IMAX!!!!!!!! :D Yeah, in hindsight, this is a nice IMAX movie.

FlyingCanOpener
The Mouse has learned that you leech the parents dry through merchandise instead of the movie, so that explains the general quality of the Disney IP's as opposed to, say, the DC Murderverse. Mr King
Ive not seen the Krays film, but the man is a damn good actor. So is Cillian Murphy come to that. Stuart thanks for sharing this. I had not heard of this show until now, and spent the evening binge watching episodes. One of my favorite shows now.
Stuart Galbraith
Its an excellent show if a little patchy. I wasnt so impressed by the last series which was not as good as the previous 2, enlivened though it was by Gaite Jansen as a psychotic sexually rapacious Russian countess (which probably should be in everyones life as some point I guess). Well worth watching all the same. Personally I cant help but think it would be a good idea to relaunch BSA with all the screen time they are getting. I never really found the Death Star to be impressive in the original trilogy. However, Rogue One changed that. Dammit those destruction scenes were FUCKING AWESOME!!!!!!!!!1!!!!!Rogue One reminded me of what we talked about with Captain America: Civil War - it relied on good story over destruction pr0n to make a good movie. A few weeks back I finally saw the X-Men Apocalypse movie and it was... just... awful. A big reason for that was the sheer amount of devastation was so over the top (like, despite the good guys winning the world would still have been fucked afterwards) and overshadowed the weak story. Not so in Rogue One. Yeah, the Death Star actually gets used but they're really small "tests" and in the end the visuals were, as Corinthian points out, FUCKING AWESOME. That's not what made the movie, though. Those "tests" were secondary to telling the story which featured great characters that actually got flushed out enough (just like with Civil War). And, best of all, they all died which is what needed to happen given where this story takes place in the timeline. I certainly didn't want any of them to die. I cared about basically all of them but... it had to be done and they handled it well.
Skywalkre
Second complaint is the blind guy scenes near the end. OH C'MON! Are you talking about the scene where he walks out to flip the Master Switch and the Imperials all miss him? Looking back at that scene I can't help but think that was another jab at all the critics of the original trilogy. The running joke from those movies was how Stormtroopers can't hit the broad side of the barn. However, that scene above clearly showed that the Force was protecting him and looking back at the original trilogy all those missed shots were usually aimed at two characters, Luke and Leia, that were even more Force powerful than the blind guy. Just like the Death Star's weak spot was shown to be intentional in this film I can't help but think this was purposeful to show it's not stormtroopers missing but rather the Force protecting someone. Now that the fact has worn off that TFA wasn't prequel level bad most level-headed folks agree it just wasn't a good movie (and frankly didn't set up the rest of the trilogy very well). I think the only reason some folks still stick behind TFA is good is simply for the fact it had a "strong female lead" (the only bad review I found online last night was from a female critic at MTV who praised TFA for that reason... wtf?!). Rogue One had that as well (which that reviewer somehow missed...) but also had everything else done right in the film (story, visuals, supporting cast, etc.). Even if someone high up at Disney sees Rogue One, realizes "oh shit, this is what good actually looks like" it's too late to go back and make changes to Episode VIII given how long development of modern blockbusters takes. Yep that scene. I frankly find all the force force thingy as too much religious meh, because waaaaaaaaay too many people IRL take it waaaaaaaay too seriously. I understand though why that scene happened, as you pointed it out. But still.... Oh, and Stormtroopers actually hit somethings here hahahahahaha!!!! Speaking of Stormtroopers (and note that I haven't seen the first of the third trilogy), I actually found the battle scenes in R1 to be more "realistic." I remember the awful awful mass infantry vs drones battles in Ep2 (or was that Ep3?). I also liked the Stormtrooper chatter in R1. Gives them more life. Corinthian
R1 has IMO spoiled the rest of the SW movies for me. I mean, I think nothing will top it. I found it so good that I don't want to ruin my memory of SW by watching the third trilogy. It only reinforces my decision to never watch the third trilogy at all. It does however make me want to watch the first movie that started it all (IOW, the "sequel" to R1 in the SW timeline, Ep4). toysoldier
Stormtroopers nowadays are as iconic as any other SW character, they can't be pathetic mooks any longer. Who would buy the costumes then?
