Sami Jumppanen Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 I thought that those were already in service? Or was that first ones in Russian air force only and army already have theirs?
Skorzeny Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 Are you mixing Tunguska and Pantsir? I think that this model (wheeled) is only going into service with the airforce. The russian army got the Tunguska M1 in 2003, so I think that it is staying in service for quite some time.
Panzermann Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 (edited) The air force use them for air field protection etc. some more pics the MAN lorry is for export to UAE Edited March 23, 2010 by Panzermann
Manic Moran Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 Is it possible to have a truck/track mounted version of the CADS-N-1/Kashtan gun/missile system? Anyone know if they've tried it, or if Pantsir is a derivative thereof? NTM

No, i do know what Tunguska is, but Pantsyr's wiki pages made me think that they were already in use. Are they?
Skorzeny Posted March 24, 2010 Posted March 24, 2010 Is it possible to have a truck/track mounted version of the CADS-N-1/Kashtan gun/missile system? Anyone know if they've tried it, or if Pantsir is a derivative thereof? NTM To my knowledge they haven`t tried a trucked mounted Kashtan. The Kashtan is a big system, the turret alone weighing in at over fifteen tonnes. The system consists of one command module and up to six firing modules, so a "drop in" solution is not possible. They could probably mount the different modules on large trucks (not sure about deck penetration), but then you wouldn`t really have a mobile system. Kashtan and Pantsir are both to some extent derived from the Tunguska, which was the first gun-missile system. Kashtan and Tunguska uses the same missile, with Kashtan being more focused on the CIWS role. Pantsir is the follow on to Tunguska with improved missiles and sensors. With the improved capabilities against PGMs Pantsir should be a good CIWS, but I think they have had problems finding anyone to pay for the development cost for a naval version. All three are designed by KBP Tula.
Skorzeny Posted March 24, 2010 Posted March 24, 2010 No, i do know what Tunguska is, but Pantsyr's wiki pages made me think that they were already in use. Are they? They are already in use with export customers. The Russian airforce had some vehicles for testing before, but these ten should be the first that enter regular service "at home".
Jussi Saari Posted March 24, 2010 Posted March 24, 2010 Is it possible to have a truck/track mounted version of the CADS-N-1/Kashtan gun/missile system? Anyone know if they've tried it, or if Pantsir is a derivative thereof? Since Tunguska, Pantsir and Kashtan are designed by the same bureau I'd imagine the differences in fire-control systems are probably based on real differences in the needs posed by the different environments and commonality is probably as high as practical between the systems. The other main difference is the guns and the twin gatlings are probably fine if you plan to use the system in the odd and hopefully rare case there's an anti-ship missile about to come and kill you and you basically want to throw everything you can at it in the few seconds available, but the recoil forces and ammo consumption of twin gatlings might be a bit much for a ground vehicle...
Richard Young Posted March 24, 2010 Posted March 24, 2010 Huh? Why does the AF has its own AD units? Many militaries are that way - the Luftwaffe in WWII manned the AA guns - Goering even had some ground combat units in his LW....
Peter3110 Posted March 24, 2010 Posted March 24, 2010 The air force use them for air field protection etc. some more pics the MAN lorry is for export to UAE I thought that the UAE had paid to have theirs fitted on the Tunguska chassis?
Skorzeny Posted March 24, 2010 Posted March 24, 2010 (edited) I thought that the UAE had paid to have theirs fitted on the Tunguska chassis? They are fitted to a MAN SX 45 8×8 wheeled vehicle. Have also heard that half was supposedly going on a tracked chassis, but I think the MAN version is the only one. Atleast according to army technology Edited March 24, 2010 by Skorzeny
crazyinsane105 Posted March 25, 2010 Posted March 25, 2010 Wait, this system JUST entered service into the Russian military? So the UAE and Syria received this system before the needs of the Russian military?

Atleast according to army technology you should not use army technology as reference...what is posted there never updated again. most information are outdated
Skorzeny Posted March 25, 2010 Posted March 25, 2010 you should not use army technology as reference...what is posted there never updated again. most information are outdated Normally I wouldn`t, but the UAE order for Pantsyr was from 2000 and deliveries of the modified model they requested started i 2007, so using an article last updated in 2008 should be ok.
LeoTanker Posted March 25, 2010 Posted March 25, 2010 Wait, this system JUST entered service into the Russian military? So the UAE and Syria received this system before the needs of the Russian military? Who do you think pays best and is less likely to try to husle you, UAE or Rus. army?
