Elliot Howard Posted December 13, 2001 Posted December 13, 2001 IMHO Red Alert 2 and Homeworld are among the two best strategy games ever. Good graphics, tactical applicatations, and scinarios. Especialy homeworld.
Guest Luke Yaxley Posted December 13, 2001 Posted December 13, 2001 For me first place has to go to Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines and the mission pack Beyond the Call of Duty Honours also go to Age of Empires II, that was addictive before I got sick of it Fleet command was good for some light real-world-esque fun. Panzer general II for turn based, mainly because it is nice and simple.
Ivanjoe Posted December 14, 2001 Posted December 14, 2001 Ill vote for Panzer General 2. It is not to difficult but still enjoyable. The only problem is that you only have missions where you advance. None where you defend. But its fun enough, and you have to have a good combined arms approach or you will fail. My 2 ører.
Stefan Fredriksson Posted December 14, 2001 Posted December 14, 2001 I agree on Homeworld, and Red Alert (even more the original Command & Conquer).Other games: - Combat Mission. Simply the best squad-based ww2 tactical game... ever. Graphics are not exactly top-notch, but true 3D is used for LOS. And as far as I can tell, the units are extremely well modelled.A real must-have for anyone remotely interested in ww2-games. - The Operational Art of War 1 and 2. Best game in its class (marker-pushing on flat computer-map).
Jagdpz04 Posted December 14, 2001 Posted December 14, 2001 (edited) Real Time strategy: Red Alert! Age of empires seems too economic based. The Red Alert production bar allows you to focus on the battlefield using the "h" key for quick placement of buildings. Age of Empires is commanded on screen with each individual peasant and structure. Too many tasks to take care of, which inevitably means a player finds himself more focused internally than on the enemy. Another reason: The relative strike power of units versus structures. AOE structures are way to strong. RA is far better in dealing with maneuver. Defending your base is critical. Structures are not very strong. In AOE, your base structure strength is a defense. I feel RA is a better game based on fast maneuvers. AOE is slower paced. Edited August 20, 2021 by Jagdpz04
Sir Rosco Posted December 14, 2001 Posted December 14, 2001 Total Annihilation, everything that the C&C series ever wanted to be, but can't!
Red Ant Posted December 15, 2001 Posted December 15, 2001 For me it's gotta be either Harpoon or the TOAW series (minus the bugs).
Gennady I. Beregovoy Posted December 16, 2001 Posted December 16, 2001 Originally posted by Sir Rosco:Total Annihilation, everything that the C&C series ever wanted to be, but can't! Agree with TA. Ever since Sandstig introduced me to that - what a fine game (especially the effect of seeing tanks coming out from the water ). Harpoon gets my vote. Speaking of which, I saw a Harpoon4 in a brochure after purchasing Ghost Recon. Any news? [Edited by Gennady I. Beregovoy (16 Dec 2001).]
Elliot Howard Posted December 18, 2001 Author Posted December 18, 2001 I've never played T.A. I just might have to check it out before school starts.
mildmildwest Posted December 19, 2001 Posted December 19, 2001 Steel Panthers II. You can't beat that game with a stick. Although it could really use an update.
Al Posted December 19, 2001 Posted December 19, 2001 mmw - try this site for links to SPII updates... www.wargamer.com [Edited by Al (19 Dec 2001).]

Sir Rosco Posted December 20, 2001 Posted December 20, 2001 Too late Rsetiawan, I've already got TAWD, I haven't installed it yet on account of my being busy with other mods but I'll be trying it out shortly. Anyway, being that this isn't much of a gaming site you might want to try posting on the SimHQ forums: http://www.simhq.com/cgi-bin/boards/cgi-bi...in/Ultimate.cgi
Paul G Posted December 27, 2001 Posted December 27, 2001 I still play Close Combat: A Bridge Too Far. Old but captures the feel of combat beter than any game out there. Same goes for Sid Meyer's Civil War games. I think Starcraft is the best RTS game.
Guest Luke Yaxley Posted December 27, 2001 Posted December 27, 2001 The thing with AoE2 was that there was no real way of stopping certain ways of attack, which just dominate entire maps. Just get masses of Archers, mabey some pikemen and a lot of cavalry, but mainly archers, and then the whole map is yours, a group of 30 archers is virtually untouchable, except by mabey an onager or mangonel, and thats where the cavalry come into it. And there is nothing stopping them from destroying buildings or castle walls with arrows alone either...
rsetiawan Posted December 28, 2001 Posted December 28, 2001 Quote :I still play Close Combat: A Bridge Too Far. R :Agreed, also it is the omnly games that model 'moral' properly, besides watching your soldier ran away looking for their mom when suppressed give u much fun

Cyber_Ghost Posted January 8, 2002 Posted January 8, 2002 In my opinion the best strategy games are Steel Panthers 2, and the Close Combat series, btw I'm looking for someone to play against in CC5, if you want e-mail me

Actually, SPCamo, the people behind SPWW2 are working on SPMBT, a game based on the SP2 engine but with all the changes from SPWW2 incorporated and then some. That includes SPWW2s larger maps, larger forces and larger OOBs. Dunno when it will be out, probably not for a while. SPWW2 V5 is available at http://www.wargamer.com/spcammo/default.asp Claus B
yuval Posted January 16, 2002 Posted January 16, 2002 i tend to agree with ghost... SP series is the best. i especially like the SPWW2 from SPcamo. the CC series is very nice, but it lacks accuracy and gameplay sometimes. (like an M4A3 taking out 5 panthers when in reverse and on the move). by the way ghost - i prefer you first learn how to fight with combined arms and only then go to fight against human oponents http://63.99.108.76/ubb/biggrin.gifi don't recall losing to you... ever http://63.99.108.76/ubb/smile.gif have a nice dayyuval raz
Kadet Posted January 19, 2002 Posted January 19, 2002 BTW, I just installed CC4 and the 4.02 patch. Now when I try to start it I get a message saying I have a string error, as its unable to load the string for the ISO. DOes anyone know what's wrong?

Our second, fifth, and 7th games of SP2... remember when I kicked your butt in Israel Vs. SU 199? ?Also, last CC5 game... I won by holding more VLs, you didn't really expect me to throw 3 BAR squads and one sherman onto your bunkers, it would offend me if you tought otherwise
Juan Sosa Posted January 28, 2002 Posted January 28, 2002 I guess I'll be the first to nominate Steel Beasts to the Tanknet best game awards.
Brad Edmondson Posted January 30, 2002 Posted January 30, 2002 Originally posted by mildmildwest:Steel Panthers II. You can't beat that game with a stick. Although it could really use an update. Right on, man! I played that game to death with all sorts of mods for it. Steel Beasts is Steel Panthers II come to 3D I think
