I saw Fleet Command, 688i, and F/A-18 Hornet bundled for $9 at Office max. How are these games. I dont care about them being cheap, just wondered if they are fun to play or difficult to learn.

688i I'm told is of 'questionable' reality. (Click this button repeatedly fast, and the torpedoes will reload faster!)

I just got Fleet Command myself a week or two ago. It has been -heavily- patched. (And it needed it). Seems simple enough to learn, best described as 'Harpoon Lite'.

I will look forward to Harpoon4 as I believe it will be superior to Fleet command, regardless of how disappointed the Harpoon community will be with it, but I wouldn't say FC is the world's worst game either.

688i is one hell of a subsim, great fun, but I guess it depends on your idea of fun too.

Fleet Command is with the patches, a great fun, good looking Harpoon lite, with all of the NWS patches, it becomes fairly realistic (as far as the FC engine will allow it) but it isn't harpoon.

Anyway, I wouldn't be hlding your breath for harpoon mate, Ultimation aren't going to even touch it until around June...

And ubi might pull the plug again...

BTW, I've never heard of pushing buttons making torps load faster, and I've pressed the buttongs furously sometimes, and it's never loaded them faster, I think you were told wrong manic...

688i? Just don't get me started! Ships will generally break up and sink after taking a torpedo hit, no matter if it's a Slava, a Kuznetsov or whatever. Ships can collide with and be destroyed by whales (Yes, WHALES! It has happened to me before! ). The enemy has a tendency to sink his own ships. In plaim terms, the sim leaves a lot to be desired.

Is there a decent sub-sim out today?

I bought Silent Hunter at a bargain, but it doesn't really like my OS (who likes Win98?)...

I remember Silen Service II like a game I liked...

don't know what it would have been like today.

Fleet Command is crap. "Harpoon-Lite" is being too kind. BTW, the beta testing of Harpoon 3 PC is coming along nicely, should be ready to go in a few more months. You keeping an eye on that, Manic?

688i, after the patches, is okay, although after playing it for a while you realize that, despite first impressions, the game actually quite simplifies naval warfare. (there's absolutely zero EMCON for surface ships, for instance)

F/A-18 is a good cockpit simulation. Lots of buttons to push and neato stuff to do inside the cockpit. Not so much to do outside the cockpit, as it's the same old small-scale scripted missions that doomed F-15, but at least it's not Desert Storm anymore (which was extremely -boring- from a game perspective) The AI's BFM is still pretty bad. Oh yeah, and it needs serious hardware to run even passably. However, it does have the best in-flight refueling modeling of any flight sim on the market. I hear the multiplayer code is fairly solid but that doesn't float my boat.

$9 for the bundle, I'd say you can't go wrong. 688i and F/A-18 are both good fun for about twelve hours each as you learn all the ins and outs and whistles and bells. You might even get some giggles out of Fleet Command.

I remember the days of my old Tandy 1000XT computer (ooooh archaic!) where I played heavily with a 'sub-sim' called 'Red Storm Rising'. Yup, based on Clancy's novel. You command either a sturgeon, 688, or Seawolf. Funny thing, you could set difficulty to the max, and drive your sub on the surface with sonars active and radar emitting - and the enemy still won't see you. And with the Seawolf, you could shoot down helos, too! Yeah, lots of fun, not much in the way of realism, but fun then.

There was also the old Permit Class of subs. That was probably one of my finest hours playing through the whole campaign with one of those. Might not have been the most realistic game but I sure got my moneys worth out of it.

I got it not too long ago from the underdogs site, and it was good (very old-fashioned) fun, kind of hip shooting torpedoes to everything red. A simpler world altogether.
