The 7 foot model of the Nostromo ship featured in Ridley Scott’s sci-fi classic, Alien, has been the focus of a restoration project by The Prop Store of London. Suffering decades of damage from poor conditions of improper outdoor storage, the piece has required extensive cosmetic restoration as part of its ongoing preservation.

Don't be too sure about that.

 

Animators still need a physical referent; you will find models for spacecraft that regardless end up as CGI so as to get the details right.

You also want to block out the scene with mock ups, though I agree that the cityscapes for BR and the like are much more-economically done as CGI.

 

Still: Watching my Incredibles special features DVD, the animators referred to solid models of the characters when necessary.
