Al Posted June 21, 2001 Posted June 21, 2001 A short, fun & interesting little test to see what historical commanding officer you most resemble. Site can be found here... www.military.com/ResourceContent/?file=lpm_fd.htm BTW, I came out as John Paul Jones.
Stefan Fredriksson Posted June 21, 2001 Posted June 21, 2001 I seem to be in good company. Came out as Robert E Lee. I would like to have seen some more questions though, to narrow it down a bit.
Manic Moran Posted June 21, 2001 Posted June 21, 2001 Agreed on only having four questions. I ended up with Wes Clark. No idea if that's good or bad. NTM
Paul G Posted June 21, 2001 Posted June 21, 2001 Came up as John Paul Jones. Hmm, I'm not even a Navy man.
Barry Lewis Posted June 21, 2001 Posted June 21, 2001 4 Questions on how you would conduct a frontal assault determines your military commander type? I came out Teddy Roosevelt.
Sandstig Posted June 21, 2001 Posted June 21, 2001 I ended up as Teddy Roosevelt. Had the strange feeling that maybe the opposing commander would take it as an act of good faith if I showed up. I was seriously thinking of sending someone else though since the other side did say they'd "resume fighting immediately" which I thought silly since he was already folding... then again, why waste more lives? Concurr on too few questions... and the last one felt a little vague. Couldn't they have said something about working out a "quick" plan of action before meeting personally with the opposing side? [Edited by Sandstig (21 June 2001).]
fred derfx Posted June 21, 2001 Posted June 21, 2001 William Tecumseh Sherman! Could have been worse eh?
Andy_R Posted June 21, 2001 Posted June 21, 2001 I came out as Ulysses S Grant. I agree, the test needs more questions. AndyArmy of the Potomac !
Harold Jones Posted June 21, 2001 Posted June 21, 2001 I came out as Serman, which is kinda cool since I'm writing this from Atlanta. I think a few more questions and maybe more than two choices would have been nice.
Michael Eastes Posted June 21, 2001 Posted June 21, 2001 John Paul Jones. Could have been worse. I also think it needs more detail, more questions. Actually, the military leader I'm most like,in my mind, was Felix Zollicoffer,a Confederate general. An attack was not going as he wished;he saw a unit not following his orders, and ,riding up to them, began berating the commander, who promptly blew him out of the saddle.(Yankee unit. Zollicoffer was very nearsighted.)
Mekhazzio Posted June 21, 2001 Posted June 21, 2001 Omar Bradley. I agree, four yes/no questions isn't enough to really make decent comparisons.
Guest Dwight Pruitt Posted June 21, 2001 Posted June 21, 2001 Christ Almighty....I came out as one of the Generals I really dislike.....George S. Patton.
Chris Gould Posted June 21, 2001 Posted June 21, 2001 I made Patton too. Guess I'm going to have to find someone to slap. I was hoping for Rommel, but their was not one German General on the list.

Chris, I know you're just joking, and this isn't the right forum for this, but that's exactly why I dislike Patton so. IMHO his butt should have been busted and shipped back to the States. Out of all the German generals, I guess Manteuffel was ok

Come on you going to have to give the Germans a little more then that.

Ssnake Posted June 22, 2001 Posted June 22, 2001 Roosevelt, too. Which happens to be the exact opposite of Westmoreland, btw. (Now, I can live with that!)
Simon Tan Posted June 22, 2001 Posted June 22, 2001 Sheet....I wound up on the Wes clark ticket too...Manic...did you stay in HQ and negotiate the surrender?
Manic Moran Posted June 22, 2001 Posted June 22, 2001 When the communications went out? Yes, I stayed in the HQ. I figured the radial approach would allow me access to more information. (i.e. the length of time it takes one runner to get to one unit and back should be the same length of time it takes five runners to get to five units and back) As opposed to if I went a wandering to the front lines (a) if someone needed me, I wouldn't be found, and ( I could only see one or two units in the amount of time the runner thing would take. Also, yes, I went to personally negotiate the surrender. Seemed to be a fairly honorable thing to do. Out of interest, what -is- the perceived problem with Clark? NTM
Al Posted June 23, 2001 Author Posted June 23, 2001 Agreed, only 4 questions is not enough. But I did say is was a short test.
Guest Moriartty Posted June 24, 2001 Posted June 24, 2001 George S. Patton Can't complain there. I must say though that a few of the choices were not what I would have done. Two choices does not cover things well enough.
tankkid85 Posted June 25, 2001 Posted June 25, 2001 I got Teddy Roosevelt.not to bad I suppose. I did play their Gulf War II game, that was fun (killed time here at summer school at least) itsan interesting game, you guys should try it, its on the same site, i think there is a link from the general thing. Steve
Guest Master Blaster Posted June 25, 2001 Posted June 25, 2001 Originally posted by Manic Moran:Out of interest, what -is- the perceived problem with Clark? NTM Nick, Like so many other political generals, Wes Clark is trully brilliant. But, he lacks the "common" touch that endears many of the notable generals that find great affection here on the forum. By this I mean that I perceive that most of us here prefer lead from the front, hands on kinda guys if we were to be in a fight where lives were at stake. Wes Clark can't reach that level.... The nearest Great general I would place him with is George Marshall, he's that caliber of person. Wes Clark is truly brillant, don't get me wrong, but he's not "hands on." I would hope that someone like him is available if the US ever gets into a global war. I've worked for and close to him on two or three seperate occasions... Warning! Personal ancedotes follow.....First:he was Bn commander 1/77 Armor Ft. Carson, I was in 1/10 Cav, same brigade.... Reforger... Beer tent, big fight breaks out, My Co turns to SGM and says " Sergant Major, you and the Ncos need to deal with this".. Wesley waded in himself, (which was commendable) with predictable results...he got a great black eye. Second: He was Commander of 3rd Bde 4ID. I was a Bn MG (2/34) He wanted to schedule the UCOFT as a training event for each plt each week (or whatever) he wanted to take tanks from Mp to UCOFT site and have TCGST tasks done while one TC gunner combo was in training...Everybody there said yea this is good, workable etc... because they were all afraid of him... I said (ever the rebel) It was an unworkable mess... You take a training event that the PSG can monitor closely for each of his crews, and turned it into a major mess for him to deal with. you have to get road clearances, road guards(2 major streets to cross) weapons security, fuel for the veh etc... In other words, this simple easy to do fun and enjoyable training, has become a major piece of work, and the enthasuiasm level for it drops to near zero.... Many PSg I knew used the time spent watching their crews to catch up on paperwork and all the other crap we ask them to do nowadays....Everybody there expected him to pull my heart out slowly and painfully... he went with me though. He asked me privatley why I had stood alone when the others were for it... I told him I thought it was dumb idea...the others did too they were afraid to say so. He seemed unaware that he terrified folks...
