George Newbill Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 Kinda hard to beat OD Green. At a minium solid Butternut, OD Green and Steel Grey are the standard against which all others should be judged against.
Ariete! Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 The ACU needs a bit greener green and MORE brown. It seems to be a grey-bluish tint with lots of very light specks. The speckling also looks too subtle to 'break the outline'. I agree that a somewhat sage-colored overall Green woudl work as well or better.
Ivanhoe Posted July 27, 2009 Posted July 27, 2009 Thats kind of creepy actually. Like a multinational platoon (or your average third world army) blundered into a disintegrator ray while on partrol. Or some really huge mosquitoes. Kudos to Special-K! Well done. I vote for more backgrounds. And it might be interesting to compare-and-contrast using B&W versions of the same photos. I am wondering if patterns like Flecktarn are too even in tone, maybe. Also, I wonder how these kind of shots would look from, say 100 yards. I'm guessing that in suburban/rural terrain, visual detection out at 100-200 yards, rather than 25. On the other hand, I hope the Garden Hose Patrol throws you in the hoosegow for watering your lawn. The way this summer is shaping up, they will probably outlaw bathing here... First observation; no camo pattern does well against all backgrounds (duh). Second observation; Woodland, OD, and Alpenflage perform very well in the woodsy background. Third observation; I'm surprised how badly the Desert pattern looks.
George Newbill Posted July 27, 2009 Posted July 27, 2009 (edited) I did the exact same test and found the ACU too light, Flectarn too dark and most of the medium green cammies about right. Woodland BDUs work very well, unexpectedly well. The best were MultiCam and CadPat. MarPat was good if a bit brown overall. Edited July 27, 2009 by George Newbill
Corinthian Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 Thanks for the demo Special-K, very well done. [end seriousness] Now, please add the Liberian hip-hop gangsta style militia uniform to the fray as well, so we can compare it with the other uniforms.
seahawk Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 When I see an US solider standing around in the ACU, I am always surprised how blueish the unifrom looks in the sun.
Guest JamesG123 Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 Its even more distinctive in brightly lit desert conditions. They look like smurfs...

First observation; no camo pattern does well against all backgrounds (duh). Second observation; Woodland, OD, and Alpenflage perform very well in the woodsy background. Third observation; I'm surprised how badly the Desert pattern looks. I took some on a different background that I will post shortly, and when I can I'll see if I can get some more. I didn't think of doing the black and white thing. I'll get on that as soon as I have a chance and post it here. As for the Desert pattern, I agree, but I'm sure I can fine some areas around here where it will work at least a little better. Early spring around here is very brown and it would probably work extremely well. I can try it, but we're going to have to wait a few months. It might do okay in the fall too as all the leaves will be brown and covering the ground. Regarding watering the lawn, I actually don't bother. We're in the wettest/coolest summer in memory, and IIRC on record in a number of places! Damn global warming again. -K

[end seriousness] Now, please add the Liberian hip-hop gangsta style militia uniform to the fray as well, so we can compare it with the other uniforms. I'll see what I can do. A pair of blue jeans and maybe an orange life jacket? Or how about I go and find a pink bunny suit and use that too? -K
Special-K Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 (edited) These are a number of pics I took with the others. The background is the remains of an old rail road bridge that was put in sometime in the '30's. This bridge was for the berm in the previous pics, and is maybe 100 feet or so from where they were taken. I just put the uniforms against the stone blocks that were the bridge supports/anchors. I'll post a few more while I'm at it. If I'm hogging too much bandwidth I can take them down. Here we have Night Desert, OD Green, and Alpenflage, both close and a bit further away: The three ACU patterns: Woodland, Fleck, and 6 Color Desert: Seems to me that the Night Desert and Fleck work best here, though not surprisingly the ACU's do okay also. Some others: ACU's on grayish stones, you can see the difference between the brown and gray in the upper corner. Fleck on brownish stone. It almost seems like it could work. A more distant pic of all 9 on the rail road berm. I also have closeup pics of about everything if anyone wants. -K Edited July 28, 2009 by Special-K
seahawk Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 Thjx for the pics, but to my eye the standard ACU does not work with the stonebridge background either. I would rate it as badly as Desert.
Corinthian Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 I'll see what I can do. A pair of blue jeans and maybe an orange life jacket? Or how about I go and find a pink bunny suit and use that too?-K All of the above! Great second set demo. Can I post the same pix at another board? Will be directly quoting your posts instead of typing new ones.
Steven P Allen Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 I have discovered (what many folks probably already know) that the Swiss revamped the Alpenflage colors not too long ago; they seem more subdued and less red. Anybody have any that could be photographed against various backgrounds?
Special-K Posted July 31, 2009 Posted July 31, 2009 All of the above! Great second set demo. Can I post the same pix at another board? Will be directly quoting your posts instead of typing new ones. Yeah, sure. Go ahead and post them all you want! What board BTW? I'm always looking for new military hangouts. -K
Rubberneck Posted July 31, 2009 Posted July 31, 2009 Saw a Navy Lieutenant Commander walking around the other day in the new Navy cammies. Fuggin uglier than a sack full of broken ballsacs...

George Newbill Posted July 31, 2009 Posted July 31, 2009 I knew it! There in no place on Earth where those Alpenflagge worked, I wondered if the Swiss had a bunch of poppys growing on their' mountains.

George Newbill Posted July 31, 2009 Posted July 31, 2009 I have been to Switzerland but at the time I was not looking at the mountains, actually, I was looking at the girls. Now the Swiss mountainsides do have a lot of flowers so I gave the Swiss the benefit of a doubt on the red spots, but now we see the Swiss in their natural environment and there ain't one red flower to be seen!
Archie Pellagio Posted July 31, 2009 Posted July 31, 2009 Saw a Navy Lieutenant Commander walking around the other day in the new Navy cammies. Fuggin uglier than a sack full of broken ballsacs... At least you guys don't have reflective safety tape on your navy cams... Complete with tactical sombrero... And just some other 'Naval camouflage' patterns from around the world... http://council.smallwarsjournal.com/attach...mp;d=1247476690 and from a country who's coastline can be measured in paces and is mostly desert...

Hittite Under The Bridge Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 I googled multicam and this was the first image that popped up. God help us all......
