Rendered useless or ineffective is the same as the situation regarding the VC after Tet 68, for they were so badly defeated that they were not considered an effective fighting force for the rest of the war. Even though it was not squashed completely out of existence, it was a mere gnat on the camel's ass after that.

I'm believing that is the definition of "destroyed" being used here.

Going that way could end up being more of an anology to Tet than preferred with the possibility of it turning into a PR victory.

The latest word from FOX News is that something grave happened to IDF troops in Gaza. There was also a major Israeli military response to a Hamas move. Anything further has not cleared the Israeli censors yet.

By the way - what qualifies as a "heavily wounded", "moderately wounded" or "lightly wounded"?

I would say lightly wounded - able to fight another day; moderately wounded - out of fight for few days - non life threatening wounds; heavily wounded - life threatening wounds.

There was also some speculation that the Palestinians had the ability to booby trap their high rise buildings to the point of bringing them down via an implosion.

there is a mention that Hamas started an counteroffensive, but they were pushed back after heavy fight.
Fox just reported the IDF is saying it responded to an 'unplanned' event with great force.

The equivalent of a Banzai charge here, a charge there, pretty soon no more Hamas.

That would truly be sweet!! Twenty thousand Hamas bucket heads running right into the path of massed Israeli automatic and heavy weapons fire, with bayonts fixed and rifles at high port screaming "Allah Akbar!" You couldn't ask for a happier ending!

3 KIA (two officers and a soldier) and 20 WIA in a friendly fire incident - a tank fired by mistake at a building that has already been cleared.

Golani commander lightly wounded. Arty fire was called in to cover the evacuating helos.

On the other side ~100 KIA today (armed/civilian mix unclear) as IDF is moving into more built up areas surrounding Gaza-city, Hamas is intensifying its resistance trying to exploit their perceived advantage in MOUT.

Electricity to Gaza has been completely cut.

The brigade commander WIA? Good for him; leading from the front. Very admirable.

Neutral doctors in Gaza are reporting very difficult at local hospitals. The Israelis halted the transfer of patients out of the Strip when the ground operation began. We can hope they resume soon.

Why?? They are people pledged to kill your country, why should the Israelis let them in? Send them medical supplies

My thoughts and prayers are with the IDF and Israeli people at this time.

Heres to hoping they can topple the evils of Hamas.

Not necessarily such a good thing. It was nice when a knight or something could ride in front of his troops waving his spear, or a lieutenant rising first under machinegun fire to lead an assault, but today in many situations its really uncalled for. Yet IDF officers have a tradition of doing that all the time and often getting killed in the process. A brigade CO is supposed to be coordinating his units, fire support, intel data, evac efforts, etc., etc.,

In this incident, both the col. and lt.col. were wounded - WTF?

Side note - the CO is colonel Avi Peled, on his watch as the commander of the southern Gaza brigade Gilad Shalit was kidnapped some 3 years ago. Since then he moved on to Golani, but apparently you can't get far enough from Gaza - it keeps pulling you back in...

See that's what I like about you Paul, and the international media. During the first week of the op, we sent through over ten thousand tons of aid - food, medical supplies, even ambulances (guess what they ended up being used for?) into Gaza, accepted over a hundred people into our own hospitals and provided them with top notch medical treatment (free of charge! the PA won't pay for it), so on and so forth. Yet not a single peep from a Guardian or a Times, nothing to say "hmm maybe these guys aren't so bad and evil after all". But the second we stopped doing it - for the first day of the ground invasion, now the aid shipments have resumed - we get blamed. Everything good that we do is taken completely for granted, and anything bad that can happen, is entirely our fault.

Because helping the sick and injured is a good thing to do.

Send them aid, let their own doctors and the rest of their Arab supports take care of them... why import people into your country to treat so they can plot against you? Does not make a lot of sense

Well, after the lead-from-the-rear types I encountered in my service, I find it refreshing and admirable. (Although you have a very valid point too.)

I give Israel full snaps for its humanitarian efforts before the ground push. It shows a very good side of the nation.

Sad part is the heroic men and women of the IDF will be expected to take prisoners.

I for one, after the way Hamas treats even its own people, would hesitate to be so generous.

Side question : If - when - these murderers are taken prisoner, are they treated like the common criminals they are ? Or as legally uniformed combatants ?

IDF has captured about 50 or a bit less Hamas members so far I believe. They're treated as terrorists - taken into a filtration camp set up just outside of Gaza first, and from there on will go into israeli prisons, presumably to be exchanged for Shalit, or just released back into the wild as part of an agreement or as a 'good will gesture', at some point in the future.

I wonder what would happen if Israel decided to charge all the Hamas members taken prisoners as POWs. segregate them in designated POW camps. Then Israel could hold on to them indefinately until Hamas agrees to a POW swap; these 50 or so for Gilad Shalit. No Gilad, no return of Hamas POWs which would otherwise be freed in 3-5 years for good behavior or as good-will gesture.

I know that giving them POW status is akin to elevating terrorists into the function of a regular soldier, which would be a degradation of what a professional soldier stands for, but this idea should be studied further.

They should take the opportunity to implant tracking beacons into the Hamas prisoners before release. ;)

Oh snap. RIP to those dead and quick healing to the WIA.
