dejawolf Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 (edited) found a few articles on spall protection on ISS and space vehicles:http://orbitaldebris.jsc.nasa.gov/newslett...s/ODQNv12i3.pdfhttp://www.nap.edu/openbook.php?record_id=5532&page=27http://www.space4peace.org/articles/space_junk.htm heh, they have a pretty funky name for spaced armour: http://www.nap.edu/openbook.php?record_id=...0003269mmm00011 "whippler bumper" Edited November 29, 2008 by dejawolf
dejawolf Posted November 29, 2008 Author Posted November 29, 2008 oh, also found this page with spall simulation videos and stuff: http://hitf.jsc.nasa.gov/hitfpub/main/index.html
dejawolf Posted November 29, 2008 Author Posted November 29, 2008 right. well nasa is currently researching shielding for lower-velocity space junk with diameters of up to 10cm.
toysoldier Posted December 3, 2008 Posted December 3, 2008 (edited) 10cm is also roughly the cutoff for debris they can resolve on radar and thus avoid from what I remember. Humm... somehow i prefer a good armor than the hypotethic ability to duck. Who knows what might fail on whatever they might use to "avoid"? Besides, you can´t allways detect everything, and mebbe you just gotta move into "crowded" orbits. Or is it that 10cm+ is just too much to shield against? One gets bezzeld with the sheer power of things moving in space. Edited December 3, 2008 by toysoldier
toysoldier Posted December 4, 2008 Posted December 4, 2008 The coverage should be thought of more like protecting a helicopter than protecting a tank. Its going to be huge helo to shake around Its a shame they can´t use some sort of laser cannon to small them meteors a bit to cool to be real.

toysoldier Posted December 5, 2008 Posted December 5, 2008 well, heating meteors with lasers is only going to cause you to be hit by very hot meteors, and shooting it is only going to cause more space junk. And that if you actually manage to heat them or split them But in movies it works...
