MOSCOW — As if things in Russia were not looking sufficiently apocalyptic already, with 100-degree temperatures and noxious fumes rolling in from burning peat bogs and forests, there is growing alarm here that fires in regions coated with fallout from the Chernobyl nuclear disaster 24 years ago could now be emitting plumes of radioactive smoke.

“There is no need to sow panic,” he told the Interfax news agency. “Everything is fine.” <_<

Here's something from an episode of Castle (ABC primetime show);

http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/europe/08/11/france.restaurateur.body/index.html?hpt=Sbin

Paris, France (CNN) -- The body of a retired restaurateur who's been missing for two years has been found in a freezer in the French city of Lyon, police there told CNN Wednesday.

The corpse of Jean-Francois Poinard, 71, was discovered Tuesday in the apartment he had shared with a girlfriend in Lyon, regarded as the culinary capital of France.

Police said an autopsy will be conducted.

I guess they'll need to thaw him out overnight in the fridge before taking his giblets out.

If he goes to jail for that, it's a travesty.

Sure, he's going to lose his job, but the woman who refused to obey the instructions of a crew member, verbally abused him and then struck him with her bag should get a life ban from the airline and be charged with everything that the police should be able to think of. It seems that the latter is what they've done to Slater.

The facts coming in are a bit different...

A passenger on the JetBlue fight from which attendant Steven Slater disembarked Monday by activating the emergency chute and sliding down with beers in hand said Mr. Slater, apparently after being hit in the head by a passenger, was the one who instigated the confrontation that led to his now-famous exit.

Marjorie Briskin, a 53-year-old schoolteacher from Pittsburgh, said she was deplaning in John F. Kennedy International Airport around noon Monday when Mr. Slater and a woman walking in front of her got into a heated conversation over the woman's luggage. She said the passenger, who appeared to be in her 20s, asked Mr. Slater where her bag was stowed.

Ms. Briskin said the seemingly normal conversation turned unexpectedly nasty when Mr. Slater blurted out an expletive to the passenger.

"I didn't think she was rude in the least," said Ms. Briskin, who was visiting the city for the first time. "It really blew my mind. It was so inappropriate."

Ms. Briskin said Mr. Slater sported a "nice gash" on his head for most of the flight, during which there were no problems until the end, when she said Mr. Slater began methodically opening the overhead bins and then slamming them shut.

"He looked disturbed at that point," she said.

And this;

Lauren Dominijanni, 25, who was flying to New York on business, said Mr. Slater was rude to her the moment she got on the plane.

She said someone had spilled coffee on her seat and when she asked for a sanitary wipe to clean it up, Mr. Slater "rolled his eyes at me and said, 'What?' in a real rude manner."

Ms. Dominijanni, of Pittsburgh, said that when she pointed to the spilled coffee, Mr. Slater barked, "No! Maybe when we get in the air! I need to take care of myself first, honey!" She said he was pointing to the gash on his head.

Ms. Dominijanni said Mr. Slater never returned with wipes to clean up the spilled coffee. She said he spent much of the 90-minute flight slamming overhead bins and refrigerator doors.

"It wasn't normal and he shouldn't have been acting that way," she said. "I felt so uncomfortable on that flight."

On Monday, JetBlue Airways officials were accused of waiting about 25 minutes before notifying authorities that Mr. Slater had activated the emergency chute and slid down. Two days later, Port Authority Police detectives investigating the case have still not received an explanation for the delay, the police official said.

Mr. Slater leaves a correctional facility in the Bronx after posting bail on Tuesday.

.In addition, the police official said JetBlue officials initially refused to hand over the flight manifest—even though it was leaked to several media outlets—and did so only after requiring the Port Authority Police to subpoena it. JetBlue has also not complied with the Port Authority Police detectives' request for copies of any videotape showing the incident, the official said.

If there are any videotapes not yet incinerated, I bet they'd become Internet classics.

http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/2010/08/12/2010-08-12_rage_just_took_off_jetblue_jumpers_fuse_lit_before_flight_left_gate.html

Marland, 51, and other passengers in the front had filed out of the plane when Slater commandeered the public-address system, dropped the F-word a few times, and pulled the lever on the escape chute.

His lawyer claimed he was simply trying to escape the female passenger who hit him on the head with the bin door and who began haranguing him after the plane landed.

Which explains the bottles of beer taken down the slide...

Bed Bugs at Time Warner Center in New York

By Chris Ariens on Aug 13, 2010 03:43 PM TVNewser has learned the human resources department of TBS Inc. has sent out an email this afternoon alerting staffers of a bed bug problem in their New York City offices at Time Warner Center -- home to CNN, CNNMoney.com and other Time Warner entities.

The Time Warner Center Facilities Department advises that bed bugs have been detected in Time Warner Center. This determination was made after testing was conducted on several floors of the building.

A CNN spokesperson tells TVNewser, "the building management is addressing the issue and is taking immediate action."

Bed bugs have been the scourge of New York for several years. In Nov. 2007, an exterminator was called to the Fox News newsroom to take care of a bed bug problem there. And last month, AgencySpy reported a New York ad agency closed due to a bed bug infestation.

LANCASTER, Pa. (AP) -- Authorities in central Pennsylvania are trying to find out who stole from a grave the body of a 9-year-old girl who died almost half a century ago. Lancaster police are investigating the disappearance of the body of Paula Ream, who died in August 1962 and was buried in Riverview Cemetery.

Family members say they were shocked when a police supervisor and a chaplain told them Friday evening someone recently had dug up the grave and made off with Paula's child-size casket and her remains.

Meth turnes man into Public Hero:

Chris P. Collins is being held in the Ada County Jail on a felony charge of possession of methamphetamine and misdemeanor malicious injury to property after Collins told Boise police he attacked a pop machine with a hatchet because he thought somebody was trapped inside.

Boise police were sent to a motel on Broadway Avenue at 8:46 p.m. Sunday to investigate a report of a man carrying a hatchet in the area. When police arrived, they found the Pepsi machine damaged and saw Collins holding the hatchet. That's when Collins told police he attacked the machine because he suspected someone was inside, according to reports.

Police say the 47-year-old Collins sat down when asked and peacefully handed over the hatchet to officers.

Police say Collins also gave them the key to his motel room, where officers found two used syringes and a spoon with white residue that tested positive for methamphetamine, according to reports.

Police then arrested Collins and booked him into the Ada County Jail.

Veterans Outraged After Army Hero's Grave Site Turned Into Dog Park

VENTURA, Calif.

Associated Press

August 16, 2010

The grave site for an 1860s Army hero awarded the Medal of Honor is now a popular Ventura dog park with poop soiling what veterans say should be sacred ground.

fox newsClick here to find out more!

The grave site for an 1860s Army hero awarded the Medal of Honor is now a popular Ventura dog park with poop soiling what veterans say should be sacred ground.

"Talk to any veteran, he will tell you it is a terrible thing. It's disrespectful," said retired Marine Sgt. Craig "Gunny" Donor, who served two tours in Vietnam and is bent on getting the soldier's remains moved.

Pvt. James Sumner, who was awarded the nation's highest military honor for gallant actions after a band of Apache Indians kidnapped a settler's child, died in 1912 and he was buried in what was then St. Mary's Cemetery.

Most of the flat grave markers have been hauled away, but a few dozen markers still pepper the 7-acre Cemetery Memorial Park that was home to about 3,000 permanent residents. Most were never relocated.

The lush, well-manicured hillside patch of green on Main Street just a few blocks east of downtown Ventura has pine, thickets of overgrown junipers and a magnificent view of the Pacific Ocean and Ventura Pier.

"It's a beautiful memorial park, a different kind of park because living people come to have fun. I would think those buried here would like that," said Jessi Burt, a 24-year-old park neighbor walking her boxer Ally.

Others jogging with dogs in the park say pet owners are good about cleaning up after the animals.

"The people who use the park are the most reverent, in my opinion. Sometimes, people will come up and pick up my dog's poop before I have a chance," said Beverly Karbum, 58, who was walking her Australian shepherd Roxanne.

Army records show Sumner was a 28-year-old immigrant from London who led the 1869 chase after the kidnapped child into a remote canyon in the Chiricahua Mountains in southeastern Arizona. There was an ambush and a fierce firefight, but Sumner held off attackers until reinforcements arrived. Records don't indicate what happened to the child.

President Ulysses S. Grant awarded Sumner the Medal of Honor in 1870. Donor believes the medal is buried with him.

Sumner died in 1912 at age 72. He never married and there are no heirs, Donor said.

"I'm trying to get him moved to Bakersfield National Cemetery. He needs to be moved to a place of respect. Cemeteries are solemn places," said Donor.

But Ventura leaders have so far balked at moving Sumner.

"We are treating him pretty darn well, except for the poop," parks and recreation commissioner Sharon Troll told the Ventura County Star.

The commission voted July 21 to postpone for two months Donor's request to unearth Sumner.

Park commissioners have told Donor they're committed to a long-delayed effort to commemorate the area pioneers and military dead in the park.

But Donor, who lives in Fontana and is a state captain for the Patriot Guard Riders, a motorcycle club that honors fallen veterans, isn't convinced. He expects the fight to wind up in court.

"He has no family, no one else to stand up for him, except for his brothers and sister in arms," Donor said.

LONDON (Aug. 16) -- Quasimodo is one of literature's great tragic heroes: kind and gentle, yet doomed by a hideous deformity. But a recent discovery by a British archivist hints that the bell-ringer from "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" wasn't merely a product of Victor Hugo's vivid imagination; he may have been inspired by an actual historical figure.
