<h1 class="head">Boys With Unusual Names More Likely to Break Law</h1>

Boys in the United States with common names like Michael and David are less likely to commit crimes than those named Ernest or Ivan.

David E. Kalist and Daniel Y. Lee of Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania compared the first names of male juvenile delinquents to the first names of male juveniles in the population.

The researchers constructed a popularity-name index (PNI) for each name. For example, the PNI for Michael is 100, the most frequently given name during the period.

The PNI for David is 50, a name given half as frequently as Michael. The PNI is approximately 1 for names such as Alec, Ernest, Ivan, Kareem, and Malcolm.

Results show that, regardless of race, juveniles with unpopular names are more likely to engage in criminal activity. The least popular names were associated with juvenile delinquency among both blacks and whites.

The findings, announced Wednesday, are detailed in the journal Social Science Quarterly.

While the names are likely not the cause of crime, the researchers argue that "they are connected to factors that increase the tendency to commit crime, such as a disadvantaged home environment, residence in a county with low socioeconomic status, and households run by one parent."

"Also, adolescents with unpopular names may be more prone to crime because they are treated differently by their peers, making it more difficult for them to form relationships," according to a statement released by the journal's publisher. "Juveniles with unpopular names may also act out because they consciously or unconsciously dislike their names."

The findings could help officials " identify individuals at high risk of committing or recommitting crime, leading to more effective and targeted intervention programs," the authors conclude.

I don't care what they say, I'm still naming my boy Dweezerp Urgwold Malperthot.

HOSPITAL managers have called in an exorcist after shaken workers complained they are being terrified by a GHOST. Spooked staff at Derby’s new Royal Hospital claimed a black-clad figure wearing a cloak was stalking wards and corridors. Now chiefs at the £334million NHS site are to summon a local priest to see off the “spirit”.

Experts said the spirit could be the ghost of a Roman soldier killed on the spot where the original hospital was built in the 1920s. Developers ignored protests and covered over part of one of Ancient Britain’s main Roman roads.

FIGHTER pilots were put on red alert in a UFO drama over Germany, it emerged yesterday.

Air traffic controllers tracked a mystery object speeding across the entire country.

Investigators have checked and excluded conventional aircraft, weather balloons and freak atmospheric conditions.

Axel Raab of Germany’s air traffic safety office, the DFS, said: “We have ruled out all the conventional possibilities — it is a mystery.”

There were dozens of reports of the object as it flew across southern Germany on January 19.

It vanished above an area used by US troops on training exercises.

Mr Raab said: “It confused radar operators because it kept flicking on and off the screen. Then it simply vanished.”

Charges filed in man's attempted 'sacrifice'

Girlfriend survives stabbing attack on Queen Anne

By LEVI PULKKINEN

P-I REPORTER

http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/397830_assault29.html

King County prosecutors filed assault charges Wednesday against a Seattle man accused of attempting to "sacrifice" his live-in girlfriend.

According to police, Oumar Lam's 26-year-old girlfriend arrived at their Queen Anne apartment Sunday to find him lying naked on a couch near a candle-lit altar. The woman told police she was seated on a bed when Lam attacked her from behind, pulling a pillowcase over her head and attempting to suffocate her.

Pulling her head back, Lam, 31, allegedly sliced the woman's throat while yelling in an unidentified language, according to court documents. She told police she attempted to break away from him as he pulled her toward the altar, at which he had apparently been praying for hours before her arrival.

Police assert that Lam continued stabbing her during the struggle, cutting her chest, back and shoulder before she was able to dial 911. The woman, police said in court documents, "was extremely fearful that Lam was trying to kill her as part of a sacrifice."

The woman told police he was ranting to himself throughout the attack.

"Die, die and go alone," Lam said repeatedly, according to police reports. "You have to go by yourself."

The woman fled the apartment, pursued by a still-nude Lam, according to police. Lam dragged her back to the apartment.

Weakened from blood loss, the woman was still able to rush to the door when officers knocked. According to police, Lam continued to chant when confronted by officers.

On Wednesday, prosecutors filed a first-degree assault charges against Lam, with sentencing enhancements for domestic violence and the use of a deadly weapon. Requesting that bail be set at $1 million in the attack, Deputy Prosecutor David Gross described the incident in court documents as a "vicious attack (that) shows that the defendant is an immeasurable threat to the community."

The woman underwent emergency surgery at Harborview Medical Center after the incident and is expected to survive.

Bail has not been set in the case because Lam, who remains in the King County Jail, has refused to attend two hearings. He is scheduled to be arraigned Feb. 11 and faces 10 to 13 years in prison if convicted.

Skydiving Instructor Dies, First-Timer Lands Safely in Tandem Jump

Sunday , February 01, 2009

AP

CHESTER, South Carolina — Authorities say a skydive instructor who was sharing a parachute with a first-time jumper apparently died of a heart attack in the air.

Officials say the instructor was identified as George C. "Chip" Steele of Sumter, South Carolina.

The first-time jumper was able to parachute to the ground safely Saturday in Chester County. He tried to revive the 49-year-old instructor after they had landed, but the coroner's office says it was too late.

They were skydiving in a tandem jump, where instructors are strapped to the backs of their students.

The first-time jumper was described as an active member of the military in his 30s, but his name was not immediately released.

Steele worked for Skydive Carolina and had made thousands of jumps over a lengthy career.

STOUGHTON, Wis. -- There will always be a fascination with trying to explain what seems unexplainable.

One Stoughton store owner is looking back at the history of her building to explain why she feels she's never alone.

Several years ago Vicky Elsing and her husband fell in love with a 118-year-old building in Stoughton and opened a business at the location. They say the business isn't all that moved in.

The Elsings say there is something else there that refuses to vacate.

"My first experience, I ran out of the building,” said Elsing.

Once skeptics of the paranormal, the Elsings' purchase of the former Grand Hotel in Stoughton changed their minds.

"We really didn't believe that stuff. After we came in and started painting and fixing up some stuff, things started happening,” said Vicky Elsing.

Whatever else resides in the building, Elsing is not quite sure. But she's trying to find out.

To do that, Elsing has enlisted the help of the Paranormal Investigators of Milwaukee.

Once in the Habor area, she investigated a number pigeons found hanging from a tree outside a courthouse. She later discovered it was a sacrifice done to help someone in a court.

In a radio interview, Garcia cited initial reports that at least three of the dolphins may have died, even as local residents tried to push them back into the water.

"Mahigit 100 dolphins ang stranded sa Pilar ... Report namin about 30 minutes ago tumawag ako sa SBMA at Ocean Adventure na magpadala ng rescue team dito [More than 100 dolphins were stranded in Pilar town. About 30 minutes ago I called the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority and

"This is a phenomenon, ngayon lang nangyayari ito [it is only now that this happened]," he added.

Coast Guard commandant Vice Admiral Wilfredo Tamayo said he is coordinating with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources to rescue the dolphins.

Fighter jets scrambled after UFO follows plane over Athens

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics...ver-Athens.html

The object was spotted by the pilot of Olympic Airways flight 266 from Athens, and the sighting was corroborated by staff at Athens Airport and a nearby Greek air force base. Pilots of two other passenger jets also reported seeing the body. The eyewitnesses described it as looking like a large star, although it was moving erratically and constantly changing shape.

Two fighter jets were sent to investigate the sighting over the Greek capital in November 2007 but the object shot up into the sky and vanished before they could get a clear view.

ATHENS, Greece, Feb 9, 2009 (UPI via COMTEX) -- A newly released Greek aviation authority report indicates that three Olympic Airways pilots reported seeing the same UFO while flying in the night sky.

It flew fast like a jet, made a whirling sound and left an odd glow. That's how an amateur photographer described a flying machine he spotted in the skies near Rose Hill on Friday. The UFO world is now paying attention to his photograph.

On Monday, the photo appeared under the headline "Weird Object in Wichita," on UFO Digest, a Canadian Web site. The object looks like some kind of new-technology fighter jet, possibly a prototype, said UFO Digest editor and publisher Dirk Vander Ploeg.

A REPORT of a ‘pink UFO’ in Mannamead was among 300 unexplained sightings examined by the Ministry of Defence last year.

The account of the sighting at 8.20pm on September 3 says there was a floating ‘large bright pink light’ from which ‘two small pieces’ broke off.The viewer then reports that it ‘accelerated and disappeared’.

According to an official report just released to the public by the MoD, other strange occurrences included a ‘very bright light’ which ‘zig zagged across the sky’ in Millbrook and Torpoint, last May.

Four reports of weird lights were also received from Delabole in Cornwall, and there was a bizarre sighting in Exeter where a UFO was ‘flying around’ at ‘about 250mph’ looking like it was ‘having trouble keeping in control’.

Google Earth 'helps man find buried Spanish treasure ship'

A treasure hunter who claims to have found a buried ship filled with treasure using Google Earth, the popular satellite imaging service, is fighting a legal battle to excavate the site.

Nathan Smith claims the lost gold and silver cargo of a Spanish barquentine that reportedly ran ashore south of Refugio, Texas, in 1822, could be worth$3 billion (£2 billion).

Mr Smith, a musician from Los Angeles, said he used Google Earth, an internet site normally used by people wanting to find their own rooftop, to zoom in to a spot north of the Aransas Pass.

There, he saw an outline shaped like a shoeprint near an area known as Barkentine Creek, where the vessel was said to have run aground, he said.
