Unreal John Posted January 24, 2009 Posted January 24, 2009 (edited) VATICAN CITY - The Vatican's relations with Jews risked a new crisis Friday after an excommunicated British bishop - reportedly in line for rehabilitation - said that historical evidence "is hugely against 6 million Jews having been deliberately gassed" during World War II. He has a point - estimatedly half of the Jewish victims of Holocaust was not deliberately gassed but deliberately starved and deliberately shot Perhaps the reports that the "bishop" is in line for rehabilitation are as accurate as the bishop's historical studies. (November 29, 1905 – March 25, 1991), better known as Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, was a French Roman Catholic archbishop. Following a career as an Apostolic Delegate for West Africa and Superior General of the Holy Ghost Fathers, he took the lead in opposing the changes within the Church associated with the Second Vatican Council. In 1970, Lefebvre founded the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX), which is still the world's largest Traditionalist Catholic priestly society. In 1988, against the orders of Pope John Paul II, Lefebvre consecrated four bishops to continue his work with the SSPX. The Holy See issued a statement that Lefebvre had thereby incurred the automatic excommunication that canon law applies for such actions. His supporters and some canonists deny this. The "bishop" is one of Lefebvre's consecrations, not recognized by the Church. If he were rehabilitated, it would be as an ordinary priest, a condition that it seems most unlikely that he would accept even should the church decide to accept him back. Links led on to this http://www.catholicherald.co.uk/articles/a0000226.shtml article, which tells me more than I want to know about "Bishop" Williamson. BansheeOne Posted January 24, 2009 Posted January 24, 2009 Seems he dunnit. Pope rehabilitates Holocaust denier, angering JewsSat Jan 24, 2009 12:53pm EST By Philip Pullella VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Benedict rehabilitated on Saturday a traditionalist bishop who denies the Holocaust, despite warnings from Jewish leaders that it would seriously harm Catholic-Jewish relations and foment anti-Semitism. The Vatican said the pope issued a decree lifting the excommunication of four traditionalist bishops who were thrown out of the Roman Catholic Church in 1988 for being ordained without Vatican permission. The four bishops lead the ultra-conservative Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX), which has about 600,000 members and rejected modernizations of Roman Catholic worship and doctrine. The Vatican said the excommunications were lifted after the bishops affirmed their willingness to accept Church teachings and papal authority. In healing a 20-year-old schism that had wounded the Catholic Church, the decree looks set to spark one of the most serious crises in Catholic-Jewish relations in 50 years. "We have no intention of interfering in the internal workings of the Catholic Church, however, the eagerness to bring a Holocaust denier back into the Church will cast a shadow on relations between Jews and the Catholic Church," Israel's ambassador to the Vatican Mordechai Lewy, told Reuters. One of the four bishops, the British-born Richard Williamson, has made a number of statements denying the full extent of the Nazi Holocaust of European Jews, as accepted by mainstream historians. In comments to Swedish television broadcast on Wednesday, he said "I believe there were no gas chambers" and only up to 300,000 Jews perished in Nazi concentration camps, instead of 6 million. Williamson said: "I believe that the historical evidence is hugely against 6 million having been deliberately gassed in gas chambers as a deliberate policy of Adolf Hitler." Israel-based Rabbi David Rosen, head of inter-religious affairs for the American Jewish Committee, told Reuters:. "The late Pope John Paul II called anti-Semitism a sin against God and man. The denial of the overwhelmingly detailed documentation of the Shoah is anti-Semitism at its most blatant. "In welcoming an open Holocaust denier into the Catholic Church without any recantation on his part, the Vatican has made a mockery of John Paul II's moving and impressive repudiation and condemnation of anti-Semitism," he said. VATICAN DEFENDS DECREE Asked about Williamson's comments, chief Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi said they were "totally extraneous" to the lifting of the excommunications. "This act regards the lifting of the excommunications, period," Lombardi told reporters. "It has nothing to do with the personal opinions of a person, which are open to criticism, but are not pertinent to this decree." Elan Steinberg, vice president of the American Gathering of Holocaust Survivors and their Descendants, told Reuters: "At a time when the Vatican should have sided with the victims it acted instead to desecrate their memory. "This was an act of moral debasement unworthy of a moral institution. For this Vatican political expediency trumps ethical and human considerations," he said. Catholic-Jewish relations were already severely strained over the figure of wartime Pope Pius XII, who Jews have accused of turning a blind eye to the Holocaust. Jews have asked the Vatican, which denies the charges, to freeze the procedure that can lead to his sainthood pending more study of wartime records. Pope Benedict has already made several gestures of reconciliation to the schismatic group, including allowing the unconditional return of the old-style Latin Mass. That move also angered Jews because the ceremony includes a Good Friday prayer for their conversion. (Editing by Jon Boyle) http://www.reuters.com/article/worldNews/i...E50N19320090124
X-Files Posted January 25, 2009 Posted January 25, 2009 For seventy years, a prayer book moldered in the closet of a family in France, passed down from one generation to the next. Its mildewed parchment pages were stiff and contorted, tarnished by burn marks and waxy smudges. Behind the text of the prayers, faint Greek letters marched in lines up the page, with an occasional diagram disappearing into the spine. The owners wondered if the strange book might have some value, so they took it to Christie's Auction House of London. And in 1998, Christie's auctioned it off—for two million dollars. For this was not just a prayer book. The faint Greek inscriptions and accompanying diagrams were, in fact, the only surviving copies of several works by the great Greek mathematician Archimedes. http://www.sciencenews.org/view/generic/id..._for_Archimedes

The 14-year-old walked into a Chicago police station and managed to secure an assignment. He did not have a gun, issue any tickets or drive the patrol car, Associated Press reported. Assistant Superintendent James Jackson said the boy's deception was only discovered after the patrol ended. Officers noticed his uniform didn't have an official star. Police said they were investigating how the "serious security breach" went undetected for so long. Deputy Superintendent Daniel Dugan said the boy looked older than 14, and was motivated by a desire to be an officer rather than malice or "ill intent", Associated Press reported. He also took part in a program for youth interested in policing, and would have been familiar with some procedures, police said. . Edited January 26, 2009 by Luke_Yaxley

By Daily Telegraph ReporterLast Updated: 1:24AM GMT 27 Jan 2009A former member of staff at the Ministry of Defence says alien craft have been fired at by the British military. ; Pilots have apparently fired upon the unidentified objects without success since the 1980s, according to Nick Pope, who used to run the Ministry of Defence's UFO project. "There was a faction in the MoD who said 'We want to shoot down a UFO and that will resolve the issue one way or another'," he told The Sun. "We know of cases where the order has been given to shoot down - with little effect to the UFO." Mr Pope claimed that the RAF only attempted to engage when the mysterious objects were perceived to be a threat. He said: "In the case of UFOs, whether the object is causing a threat is very much a pilot's judgement call. The public won't know unless it comes down in a heavily populated area." The MoD refused to comment. Earlier this month, residents in the Lincolnshire Wolds were left puzzled by the destruction of a wind turbine within hours of several sightings of strange glowing orbs. At least half a dozen residents reported seeing the orange-yellow spheres, which some witnesses claimed were trailing tentacles. Dorothy Willows, who lives a mile and a half from the wind farm, said she saw a "low-flying object skimming across the sky towards the turbines" on January 4. The following morning, a 213ft glass fibre turbine was left crippled, with locals reporting hearing a loud bang like thunder. Jeff Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 Poisonous Fish Testicles Send 7 Japanese Diners to HospitalTuesday , January 27, 2009APTOKYO — Seven diners in northern Japan fell ill and three remained hospitalized Tuesday after eating blowfish testicles prepared in a restaurant not authorized to serve the poisonous delicacy. The owner of the restaurant in Tsuruoka city, who is also the chef, had no license to serve blowfish and was being questioned on suspicion of professional negligence, police official Yoshihito Iwase said. Blowfish, while extremely poisonous if not prepared properly, is considered a delicacy in Japan and is consumed by thrill-seeking gourmets. Iwase said the seven men ordered sashimi and grilled blowfish testicles at the restaurant Monday night. Shortly after, they developed limb paralysis and breathing trouble and started to lose consciousness — typical signs of blowfish poisoning — and were rushed to a hospital for treatment, Iwase said. A 68-year-old diner remained hospitalized in critical condition with respiratory failure and two others, aged 55 and 69, were in serious condition, he said. "It's scary. If you go to a decent-looking restaurant that serves fugu, you would assume a cook has a proper fugu license," Iwase said, using the Japanese term for blowfish. Blowfish poison, called tetrodotoxin, is nearly 100 times more poisonous than potassium cyanide, according to the Ishikawa Health Service Association. It can cause death within an hour and a half after consumption. Three people died and 44 others were sickened by blowfish poisoning in 2007 — most of them after catching the fish and cooking it at home — according to the Health Ministry. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,483504,00.html
Bearded-Dragon Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 Lizard becomes father at age of 111A reptile in New Zealand has become a father at the ripe old age of 111 after receiving treatment for a cancer that made him hostile toward prospective mates. Last Updated: 5:48PM GMT 27 Jan 2009Henry the lizard has become the proud father of 11 babies aged 111. The tuatara, named Henry, was thought well past the mating age until he was caught with a female named Mildred last March – a consummation that resulted in 11 babies being hatched. Tuatara are indigenous New Zealand creatures that resemble lizards but descend from a distinct lineage of reptile that walked the earth with the dinosaurs 225 million years ago, zoologists say. An endangered species, the hatchlings born at the Southland Museum and Art Gallery will provide a badly needed boost to the tuatara's genetic diversity, said the gallery's tuatara curator, Lindsay Hazley. Henry was at least 70 years old when he arrived at the museum, "a grumpy old man" who attacked other reptiles, including females, until a cancerous tumour was removed from his genitals in 2002, said Hazley. "I went off the idea he was good for breeding," said Hazley but once the tumour was removed, "he was no longer aggressive." The museum now has 72 of the reptiles after 42 hatchings in the past two years. Hazley hopes to use Henry regularly in the breeding program that is helping expand tuatara numbers after they had been savaged by predators. Tuatara are estimated to number about 50,000, most of them living in predator-free sanctuaries, including offshore islands. A male Tuatara takes 70 years to fully mature but reaches sexual maturity about age 20. While there's no scientific data on the lifespan of the ancient reptiles, "they go beyond 100 well and truly," Hazley said. "They can be around for 150 to 250 years."[Source ]

A security train that swept the tracks an hour before the Queen's locomotive chugged through the area spotted nothing, he said.McHardy's claims were first reported in his local paper, the Lithgow Mercury, on Jan. 22. He has since repeated the story to several other media outlets, including Australia's Macquarie Radio on Wednesday. He did not immediately return messages from The Associated Press.A spokeswoman for the New South Wales police said officials were looking into McHardy's story to determine its validity.McHardy said police investigating the incident were ordered to keep details quiet to avoid embarrassing Australia. Mike Steele Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009
Hackers Crack Into Texas Road Sign, Warn of Zombies Ahead
Wednesday, January 28, 2009 By Joshua Rhett Miller i-hacked.com Texas Dept. of Transportation officials confirm a portable traffic sign at Lamar Boulevard and West 15th Street in Austin was hacked into last week. Tampering with portable road signs is illegal and potentially dangerous to drivers. It is a misdemeanor in Texas, with penalties ranging from fines to potential jail time. Transportation officials in Texas are scrambling to prevent hackers from changing messages on digital road signs after one sign in Austin was altered to read, "Zombies Ahead." Chris Lippincott, director of media relations for the Texas Department of Transportation, confirmed that a portable traffic sign at Lamar Boulevard and West 15th Street, near the University of Texas at Austin, was hacked into during the early hours of Jan. 19. "It was clever, kind of cute, but not what it was intended for," said Lippincott, who saw the sign during his morning commute. "Those signs are deployed for a reason — to improve traffic conditions, let folks know there's a road closure." "It's sort of amusing, but not at all helpful," he told FOXNews.com. Lippincott said the hacked sign — manufactured by IMAGO — is owned and operated by the city of Austin. Texas Department of Transportation signs have not been affected, he said. "It is always possible that it could occur, but we attempt to prevent hacking incidents," Lippincott wrote in an e-mail. He declined to comment on security measures to protect the state's signs from hackers. Austin Public Works spokeswoman Sara Hartley said the incident was not initially reported to police, but will be shortly. The sign was reverted back to its original message within hours, according to Hartley, who insisted the signs are tamper-resistant and equipped with external locks. "This sign was broken into, it was not just a 'walk up and change the sign' kind of thing," Hartley told FOXNews.com. "This is a new one for us, we've never had it happen before." She said she did not know whether any other signs in the area had been altered. According to the blog i-hacked.com, some commercial road signs, including those manufactured by IMAGO's ADDCO division, can be easily altered because their instrument panels are frequently left unlocked and their default passwords are not changed. "Programming is as simple as scrolling down the menu selection," i-hacked.com reports. "Type whatever you want to display … In all likelihood, the crew will not have changed [the password]." I-hacked.com warns readers not to try to alter the signs, which cost roughly $15,000. ADDCO Chief Operating Officer Brian Nicholson told FOXNews.com that the company is sending out notices to customers on the potentially dangerous security flaw. "It's incumbent upon users to change the default password and secure the sign with a padlock," Nicholson said. "We're having our engineers review this information." In the meantime, if you're driving in Austin, you can rest assured: There are no zombies ahead.
