The mine clearing or engineer variant?

The mine clearing or engineer variant?

AFAIS it is not M1132 ESV. The things in front of vehicle that you probably thought to be mountings for Mine plough / Mine rollers seem to be more like some kind of "TUSK bumper" and not the mounting of Jettison Fitting Kit that is installed to M1132 ESV. Also the turret/upper deck arraignments doesn't look like regular OWS turret (M1132 ESV has the same OWS weaponry as basic M1126 ICV). Of course gages are also off for the flight, but still the deck arrangements doesn't seem to fit any regular models that I am aware of...strange!

Edit: Where is Charles King when we need him?

Curious, what is that? Some armoured cab for the driver when he rides with his head out?

Looks like a removable weather protection cabin for the driver to me.

No look the thickness of the windows...it is certainly bullet proof glass...It most probably armoured cabin for the driver when driving with head out.

Its for taking your dog for a drive outside the Green Zone. Mk 17 Armored Cainine Protection System :P

Why would you be driving hatches up in Iraq, or any other similar AO for that matter?

if it is armoured glass, it could be to improve visibility

Near the back of that same front unit, is that an armoured window? I seem, to recall a mod that allowed an armoured window in the back to help in close in areas

Looks like a PEACE keeping veh to me

Absolutely, but the trade off is safety for the driver and therefore the crew. I'd much rather be hatches down and safe than hatches up and a little more traffic friendly.

Its got to be disconcerting to be driving and have bullets impacting on glass right in front of your face. I'd still want to pull my ass under cover and from the look of it it is impossible to drive hatches down with that cupola on...

Are there ANY episcopes on that variant?

Posted

there are no driver periscopes in this LAV, but there looks like some sort of hatch that can close... so drive till you get scared, close hatches... oh wait... your blind

I think it is some sort of police variant, maybe for Iraq security forces??

Quite an interesting photo. If this is a Stryker I am guessing it some new M1127 version. I have not seen these modifications or the desert colors before. It looks like there is some additional armor on the foward top hull too.

It is definately a Stryker, and yeah it does have a different, add-on superstructure from the engine access/intake aft.

My new guess would be some kind of C3 or FDC vehicle. That would explain the taller roof and all the doo-dads as well as the not-very-tactical driver's canopy.

Everything about it is different, from the wheel hubs through the headlights to the shape of the side armour panels in front of the front wheels to the winch. It may be a Piranha derivative, but I think it's too far from the Stryker system to have true commonality.

Yes, it is a Stryker. The structure everyone is talking about is nothing but the standard issue weather shield. Why they have it mounted inside and aircraft, now, there is a question. Stryker does have a driver's hatch with periscopes and even a full time DVE (driver's vision enhancer) or night sight.

[Edit] Found the DVE camera on the USAF pic. Never mind[/edit]

Comparing the same angles.

It's got to be testing for the new level of overall armour and apparently adds about a foot of extra thickness to the sides (Look at where the cabin goes 'vertical'). This would explain the different shape of the armour plates and the new headlight and DVE position. Wonder why they moved the winch and put new wheel hubcaps on it though?

It is most probably inter theater flight with C-17 as you see a guy (most probably Navy, as they are only ones still using DBDU's actively in Iraq&AFG) in DBDU and one in mixed up MARPAT/ACU uniform inaddition to guys in ACU (Army). Question is that from what units vehicle is in photo? The CAPT in front has 4ID patch in right hand, but can see any of the left hand patches. Photo is most deftly from Iraq, not in AFG though.
