Ivanhoe Posted May 12, 2008 Posted May 12, 2008 I just checked Windows Update and its recommending SP3 now. I've heard very little scuttlebutt about SP3 so far. Has anyone installed it yet? If so, any regrets?
Corinthian Posted May 12, 2008 Posted May 12, 2008 I asked a similar query months ago or last year, but still no word on anyone here having downloaded and installing it. Anyone?
AdmiralB Posted May 12, 2008 Posted May 12, 2008 I have it on two PCs (both notebooks). Took a long time to install, and does a fair amount of script-running and self-configuration on first restart, but so far I haven't noticed any changes (for better or for worse).
ABNredleg Posted May 12, 2008 Posted May 12, 2008 I have it running on 60 or so PCs and I haven't had any problems.

m1a1mg Posted May 12, 2008 Posted May 12, 2008 My desktops are fine with it, my Sony laptop is having issues. Of course, my Sony laptop doesn't like many things.
beans4 Posted May 17, 2008 Posted May 17, 2008 "HP Thursday confirmed that some users of its AMD-based desktops have had problems after installing Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3), and said it would issue a patch this week to prevent machines from spiraling into endless reboots." http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/arti...ises_patch.html
Ssnake Posted May 19, 2008 Posted May 19, 2008 Also, it seems that non-English SP3s have been removed from the automatic update installation routine, at least for the moment. You can still get it manually from the MS web site, but I'd wait until they make it available through Windows Update again.

The minute she explained what was going on I knew it was the Service Pack. Gee thanks Bill! Edited May 19, 2008 by EvanDP
EvanDP Posted June 12, 2008 Posted June 12, 2008 Installed Win XP SP3 on the Intel machines only and they all seem fine. In fact I can't tell any difference.
Ivanhoe Posted June 12, 2008 Author Posted June 12, 2008 Did a clean reinstall of XP on my home desktop, jumped it from SP1 to SP3. Only apparent thing so far is that Firefox is really slow. Installed 2.0, got aggravated, deleted and installed 1.0, still slow. Checked IE7 and Safari and they're fine.
Ivanhoe Posted June 18, 2008 Author Posted June 18, 2008 Update - my system response with SP3 was just unacceptable. Firefox was almost unusable on graphics intensive sites, and there were minor delays with IE. It also seemed like the general Windows GUI was a bit slower in terms of firing out menus and such. I tried running Firefox in safe mode but it still was unsat. So last night I rolled back SP3, pretty painless using Add and Remove Programs. Then installed SP2. Things back to normal, including Firefox. I had done some Google searches on Firefox performance under SP3 and ran across a wide variety of opinions on SP3. So my current conclusion is that it works for some machines, but is a real drag on others.
Corinthian Posted June 19, 2008 Posted June 19, 2008 Thanks for the timely info, Ivanhoe. I was thinking of installing SP3 this weekend. Guess will wait for a while a bit.
m1a1mg Posted June 20, 2008 Posted June 20, 2008 I had similar issues to Ivanhoe. I downloaded Firefox 3 and all is better now.

m1a1mg Posted June 20, 2008 Posted June 20, 2008 Yes. For about the last 6 hours. There were notable issues with Firefox 2.0.0.14 and SP3. Installed Firefox 3 today and noticed a significant increase in load speed.
Ivanhoe Posted June 20, 2008 Author Posted June 20, 2008 Cool. Seems kinda strange that a major version bump along with GUI changes would also seem to include some big fixes to either the rendering library, or the event loop, or both.
m1a1mg Posted June 21, 2008 Posted June 21, 2008 Could just be that my old Firefox was corrupted and the new install fixed the problems.
Corinthian Posted June 21, 2008 Posted June 21, 2008 Firefox 3? My Firefox 2 hasn't notified me of updates. I guess an upgrade is due as well, as the current v2 takes time to launch, and for 1 site, hangs up the browser for it to load the site.
beans4 Posted June 23, 2008 Posted June 23, 2008 Yes. For about the last 6 hours. There were notable issues with Firefox 2.0.0.14 and SP3. Installed Firefox 3 today and noticed a significant increase in load speed. My experience also. SP3 made the Firefox problems worse until I got FF3.
DaveDash Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 As mentioned there is an issue with AMD HP machines and service pack 3. It can cause them to go into a reboot cycle and needs to be resolved by disabling some drivers in the recovery console. We have ran into a few issues with this on sites that did not have update management such as WSUS Contrary to popular belief here, this problem is not a Microsoft one, but rather HP being lazy and using the same driver for both intel and AMD chipsets.
DesertFox Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 I just upgraded both my laptop and both of my desktop machine to SP3....Seems to be pretty stable. My laptop is a Dell C640
Corinthian Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 It's 31 August here, and my Automatic Update is asking me to install SP3. So... how are all of you doing with SP3? I just read Murph's latest computer trouble thread and that seriously deterred me from installing SP3 hehehehe

EvanDP Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 The only problem I've encountered is the combo of WinXP SP3, FF3 and FreeAVG8. It seems to make FF3 unstable. On all the machines I tend this seems to be the only problem I've encountered.
