I think it was Japan's reputation in China that got pretty permanently stomped by that, and lots of other similar episodes. I don't think it was the reputation of whatever Japan gave as excuse in each particular case. Sorry if that's what you meant, wasn't really clear.

I would agree with each of the points above.

 

My point (context: Bruckheimer's Pearl Harbor) was that it is not the reputation of the American contribution to China's fight against Japan that seems to be on its way toward being "stomped out" of the mainstream consciousness. it's the reputation of the Chinese contribution.

The US also had a better record (from China's POV) in the 19th Century than European states. We at least didn't demand major territorial concessions.

Going by what I remember from my readings, I also do not believe the AEF (I may be wrong) engaged in the kind of wholesale looting, pillaging, and murder and rape of Chinese civilians on the road to Peking to the extent that some other Western contingents seemed to have.
