Grant Whitley Posted December 12, 2007 Posted December 12, 2007 I just found out about this place- Peruvian food in Hampton Roads. Any of you locals tried it? How is the ceviche?
Hellfish6 Posted December 12, 2007 Posted December 12, 2007 If you go, try aji de gallina. It's my favorite Peruvian dish and exceedingly difficult to find.

Juan Sosa Posted December 12, 2007 Posted December 12, 2007 I can't help you with the specific restaurant that you are considering, but if you are ever in the Miami area you should go to Francesco in Coral Gables. It has been my favorite restaurant in Miami for the last 6 years and since two years ago it has received the Miami top food award from Zagat. The great thing about it is that it hasn't let that change what it was. It is still the same restaurant that I first went to....only a little harder to find a reservation. Should you get there try the tiradito, the arroz negro, the cholos en la chalaca or any of the specials. I think I know where I'll go for dinner saturday.
Grant Whitley Posted December 13, 2007 Author Posted December 13, 2007 Interesting. Looking at Imperio Inca's website, it doesn't look like their ceviche is served with popcorn as in Ecuador; it looks like it's served with mote instead.

Grant Whitley Posted December 13, 2007 Author Posted December 13, 2007 (edited) When I was in Ecuador, I never got ceviche with popcorn... I only ate it with the people I lived with; their cook was an old black woman from Esmeraldas, and she always served it with plain popcorn. It was really good too, the popcorn was a nice palate cleanser. But my friends said that their host families served it with popcorn also. Edited December 13, 2007 by Grant Whitley
Hellfish6 Posted December 13, 2007 Posted December 13, 2007 Yeah, I didn't even make it as far north as Manta, let alone anywhere near Esmereldas. I stayed in a small beach town just outside of Xipixapa, and was otherwise in the Amazon or Andes the rest of the time. I did have the best shrimp I've ever had in my life in Quito, though. Wish I could remember what it was... I think it had saffron in it somehow...
Grant Whitley Posted December 13, 2007 Author Posted December 13, 2007 The southern coast has a heavy Peruvian influence, so that would make sense.
Grant Whitley Posted December 18, 2007 Author Posted December 18, 2007 We're going on Thursday, hopefully tacking on a nostalgic visit to Mo&O'Malley's as well. Will report back.
Grant Whitley Posted December 21, 2007 Author Posted December 21, 2007 (edited) AAR: Excellent ceviche. I really enjoyed the ones which used pepper sauces, which was new to me. I had tiradito(yellow pepper sauce), fish ceviche in rocoto(red pepper sauce), and fish ceviche in a basic lime marinade. I liked the sweet potato, boiled potato, and mote they had on the side, but I did miss popcorn, which I think makes a slightly better palate cleanser. But in general I liked it better than Ecuadorean ceviche. Their posho a la brasa was pretty kickass, too. The only thing I'd ding them for was the service, which was pretty slow. But if you're in the area, give it a shot. The OP says it's in HR, which is incorrect- it's actually in the Ghent district of downtown Norfolk. Edited December 21, 2007 by Grant Whitley
