Watching a show about the Great 1938 Hurricane which hit Long Island and New England

Several important shipyards where in the path of the storm and I believe that there were several aircraft manufacturing companies on Long Island at the time (Grumman I believe).

Was there any significant effect on these industries from the Hurricane?

...and I spent half a minute contemplating what is this about as to my knowledge no Hawker Hurricane would crash on US East Coast in 1938

Note to myself: Go to bed, your brain is in critical state this evening.

I had many relatives in the area at that time but most are dead or 2500 miles away( southern Ct.).

You had the Brooklyn Navy Yard , Sikorski and Chance Vought in Bridgeport Ct. Electric boat in New London Ct.

All I ever heard was about how bad it was and trees down etc. But never the affect on industry. The problem was it snuck in without any real warning.

The problem today is the people that live there now don't realize what a hurricane will do but they cannot stay ignorant forever , Mother Nature is do to remind them any year now.

I was thinking about electric boat, were there any submarines under construction at that time there.

edit: There were subs under construction such as the USS Sargo (SS-188) but what effect did the storm have on it?

When we were kids, my brother and I used to spend summers in Saybrook, CT with my Aunt and Uncle. This was in the 1950s, and peole still talked about the 1938 hurricane. There was one section of road that crossed theback bay where the concrete slabs were tilted up at almost a 60 degree angle. They just built a new road alongside it rather than trying to repair it.

I E-mailed Electric Boat, I don't know if they will respond though.

Read that New London was hard hit hard so would think that Electric Boat was hit.
