Guest JamesG123 Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 (edited) He said: "It still has a lot of high octane fuel onboard, so it's important that the public doesn't go near it." That, I rather doubt. They should have said it might have live ordinance under it to keep the lookiloos away. Edited November 15, 2007 by JamesG123
Degenerate Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 They are probably going to have trouble getting it out. A Mk1 Spitfire turned up on a beach in dunkirk in the early 80s and was fairly intact. By the time the locals had dug it out the beach with a crane they had pretty much wrecked it. A mixture of corosion and lack of skill put paid to it. Indeed. When the Wellington bomber was recovered from Loch Ness in the mid 80s I understand the tail broke away from the plane in the final lift operations. That plane was magnificently preserved by the cold peaty fresh water as well. The landing lights still worked for example.
Brummbaer Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 I thought sea levels were rising? "The Lockheed “Lightning” fighter, with its distinctive twin-boom design, has suddenly reappeared due to unusual conditions which caused the sands to shift and erode....Since the survey in October, the sands have again buried the plane, and “whether and when it will reappear is anybody’s guess.”
Degenerate Posted November 16, 2007 Posted November 16, 2007 Even got some of the original workers to put fabric on it I gather. Speaking of which I have a chunk of the original canvas fabric in my posession. My grandmother upon visiting the recovery site told some bloke in charge about living next to the airfield it (or other Wellingtons based in the highlands) flew from during the war. The guy promptly pulled a rag of fabric from the plane and gave her it as a memento. I have since obtained it.
Degenerate Posted November 16, 2007 Posted November 16, 2007 Lucky you. You would probably make a mint out of that on Ebay. I doubt it has any value whatsoever but its a nice thing to have. Paint is still intact too. Brown on one side and green on the other as far as I can tell.
Guest bojan Posted November 17, 2007 Posted November 17, 2007 My scuba diving friend noted that there is a wreck of aircraft in Sava river near Makis (~15km from Belgrade center) - from her description it is in very sorry state and mostly covered by mud - only tail and parts of left wing are visible. From her description of twin tail and what looked like two engines on the left wing I suspect it is a B-24.
