Hi all, I thought this TV docu broadcast on the BBC on 5 November 2007 might be of interest. It's a report from a journo embedded with a company from the Grenadier Guards in Helmand Province. It's about an hour long in all and the links are in the right order (I think). FWIW it's one of the best progs of this type I've seen.

Tonight, my work puter seemed to like Youtube, I watched it while I sat on a conf call. Good show. Thanks.

You're welcome mate, glad you enjoyed it. Shows what the BBC is capable of producing when they put their mind to it. My favourite bit was when the Coy Commander referred to the ANA thinking Arty/CAS was "white man's magic"... ;) :)

I remember watching it when it was on, and thought it was an excellent piece of reportage. Pity it wasnt a series. Thanks for upping it.

Incidentally Bill, I meant to ask you, have you got that book on 3 Paras deployment to Helmand yet? Excellent book I thought.

Unfortunately I'm up to my eyeballs at the mo and haven't had time to get around to the 3 PARA book yet. My lad's got a copy which I intend to try and blag at Chrimble. :)

Great vid, thanks! :) I dunno if this Panorama episode was shown in BBC World. Office connection is slow in downloading the vid, but I got the first part. This docu is a nice companion to the other, earlier, Panorama one that's on the net as well.

Having read both and halfway through “bare foot soldier” the regiment has had a lot of media coverage, which should make up for being ignored at the time.

Great documentary, but one that raises plenty of concerns. 30 years mission? 14 billion pounds? the cash crop is opium? this is not going anywhere in the long term and given the persistence of the Taliban they are going to win.

I can't watch that at work, but is that a story about two brothers (Howe) , one officer one photographer?

I heard a funny story from a photographer with a pair of canadian snipers, no idea of the truth (if you can't trust a journalist who can you trust right? :P )

They were moving from one rooftop to another, he then fell through the roof, into a roof full of rafters draped with tons of drying 'afghan black' and opium.

On leaving flying through manas in kyrgyzstan off of a USAF C-17 at the 'amnesty box' he noticed all his pockets, and the bottom of his bag was full of "something like oregano", about a kilo of the stuff.

Apparently a true case of "its not mine officer" :P

Here's a shortcut to the Bittorrent if anyone wants to download the whole show at watch it on a big screen (you'll probably need to sign up for a free UKNova account, but it's a great site full of British shows of all kind):

Will try later. Thanks for the link. :)

I already downloaded all the parts in BillB's first post. Looking for a utility to stitch them together.

I noticed last night on the dutch news there was a long piece on dutch soldiers advising ANA and shooting talib.

No idea what it was about though, my dutch is shite.

Nice use of a 51mm mortar in the direct fire "mode" about 2:30 in!!

Yes mate, I noticed that too! Brought back memories of doing the same with de-parachuted schermulies back when Pontius was a Pilot... :)

Some photos of 40 commando.

I particularly like the 81 shot but feel I will have to write to Sp Wpns Wng about the dress of the detachment, as it states in the pam that tin bins will be worn when firing.

Dunno about that, I reckon asbestos suits are in order with that muzzle flash.

I must admit I never noticed it. But then you were taught to put your head down. It was only in about 89 that tin bins were required when firing. I was told that the bit on the end of the US version was to redirect the flash.

It’s the odd things lying around that are amusing like the bottles of water and what looks like a mug in the centre, can’t go to war without tea.

Several weeks back there was a 30 min itme on UK TV about an RAF Chinook detachment. The intereting bit was aa casevac, scabmble Chonook from a cold start in 11 mins instead of the standard 30, laod included a security section (seemed to have been RAF Regt in this instance) and the medics. None of the 'paramedic' stuff, 2 medic orderlies and 2 drs - one a trauma specialist the other an anaethetist/resusitation specialist. Unfortunately the cas (R ANGLIAN) died but the pilot put his foot down and the Chinook outran its Apache escort.

It’s not Stan but rather that do a new one I thought I would put it in here.

Language may not be safe for work.

On the right are clips by troops. The first two are inside a 432 Bulldog. The empty case down the front dance is fun. Note the forward handgrip on the rifle. “Stoppage” is generic drills for empty mag or rifle not working. I would think that the others in the back are not Inf and are being moved from place to place and the top cover has heaver armour. This may be the convoy Yon spoke of.

I have not seen the Panorama film yet so cannot comment.
