Manic Moran Posted September 1, 2007 Posted September 1, 2007 Yes, I know I live here and I can see that there are lots of civilian operations on the land, but I can't seem to find out if actual ownership was transferred. There are rumours flying around that the Powers That Are may have acknowledged an error in disbanding the majority of combat arms units in Northern California's National Guard, and to rectify this before all the combat MOS soldiers drift away, they're looking at standing up a Stryker brigade, with the Bde HQ and a battalion in the San Francisco area. (The other battalions based in other States) Far and away the most obvious place would be the Presidio. Even though the housing is now leased to the public, and a lot of warehouses are run by private companies, the base itself is still 90% untouched, down to the 4th ID insignia still painted above the doors. It would certainly be nice to get a military presence back there: It's kindof depressing to see the place Army-Free. NTM
Hellfish6 Posted September 1, 2007 Posted September 1, 2007 I'm under the impression that most of the land was sold. Doesn't LucasArts have run of the place now? I have an acquaintance that got a job out there and IIRC he said they had a whole campus where the Presido was.
Guest JamesG123 Posted September 1, 2007 Posted September 1, 2007 You guys kept some tanks AND you're getting a Stryker BDE?!??! Life is so unfair...
Old Tanker Posted September 1, 2007 Posted September 1, 2007 My understanding was that Nancy Pelosi's real estate tycoon husband took over the handling of privatizing the Presidio with their Paisan's getting inside track on the purchases .
DKTanker Posted September 2, 2007 Posted September 2, 2007 I do believe a large portion of the Presidio is now a national park.
SILL2 Posted September 2, 2007 Posted September 2, 2007 (edited) Stryker brigade in SF??? Paint the things pink? That would be appropriate. Politically SF should noy get one cent of military related tax/spending $ give the BS vomited from the cesspool over the last 40 years. I suppose have to live with bags of cash going the the S. Bay area for "high tech" gimcracks and gizmos. Edited September 2, 2007 by SILL2

Chris Werb Posted September 2, 2007 Posted September 2, 2007 Stryker brigade in SF??? That would make it the Jeff Stryker Brigade?
Rubberneck Posted September 2, 2007 Posted September 2, 2007 Nick, Whomever is spreading rumors like this is doing just that. There is no way the Guard will get another SBCT, and California has been in business of losing force structure for the last 15 years. This trend will continue until the California state leadership realizes that using education based benefits for enlisting has great merit. The fact that California's Guard is not the biggest in the country despite the mass of population in the state, along with the well known disasters that hit Cali every 2 years or so, is a crime. Shoot me a PM and fill me on the details, and I'll tell you the same from here.
DougRichards Posted September 2, 2007 Posted September 2, 2007 I thought that Mark Harmon, Sean Connery and Meg Ryan took it over back in '88?
TTK Ciar Posted September 2, 2007 Posted September 2, 2007 (edited) I work for a company headquartered in the Presidio (The Internet Archive, archive.org, at 116 Sheridan Ave near Ord St), and watched the Lucas campus go up .. they don't own the whole Presidio, just a pretty chunk of it :-) The Presidio is owned by The Presidio Trust, a civilian entity. They are charged with maintaining the grounds, preserving the historical landmarks (which somehow Lucas got around!) and making it self-sustaining by some near-future date (else it reverts to federal ownership). They are making ends meet via tourism and renting out buildings to companies to work in and families to live in (at discount rates for employees of companies based in the Presidio). It's a beautiful park-like environment with plenty of parking .. entirely unlike San Francisco (which I really don't like driving in -- fortunately I live northwards, near Sebastopol, and can drive directly from the Golden Gate bridge to the Presidio without ever touching a San Francisco street). Our datacenter is another matter .. it's located downtown, south of market avenue, on Mission Street. On days I need to be in the datacenter I park in Novato and take the bus. -- TTK Edited September 3, 2007 by TTK Ciar

Kensuke Posted September 4, 2007 Posted September 4, 2007 (edited) Speaking as a former Californian (my heart will remain forever there, but my sanity could no longer stand the place), I can tell you it's no longer the great place for basing the military it once was. The Yippies have completely taken over the state, forcing a great many of us more conservative ilk to flee to Arizona and/or Nevada. San Francisco is completely fucked in the head. To the point where even Diane Finstein and Babs Boxer are seen burying her head in her hands as they watch bases close and defense contractors abandon their constituency. El Toro is gone. The Navy pulled out of Miramar. March is only a reserve base. Every time they do a unit realignment everybody and their mother comes out and bitches about the noise. About the only place the military can play without being balled out is in the southeast portion of the state. Out where the gila monsters and rattlesnakes roam, and seldom a townhouse is seen. Kensuke Posted September 4, 2007 Posted September 4, 2007 (edited) DLI and the Naval Postgraduate College seem quite happy where they're at... NTM Only because people are too ignorant to know they're there. A classroom environment can be kept inconspicuous. Flying planes, driving armored things, shooting things, or blowing stuff up can't. Mind you, this seems to be less ridiculous in the southern part of the state. There is still big love for the Marine Corps in San Diego County. Oceanside would probably implode if Camp Pendleton were ever shut down (which God willing, will not happen). But even there, issues abound. Anti-Nuclear protesters love to picket Vandenberg AFB. I believe actor Martin Sheen got arrested at the gates on more than one occasion. And there was all manor of whining and moaning about the Helicopters flying out of Miramar. - John Edited September 4, 2007 by Kensuke
Rubberneck Posted September 4, 2007 Posted September 4, 2007 Nick - check the PM's - there is some smoke and therefore some fire!
