Dunno. The pic showed up in my FB feed, but the website that post pointed to didn't give me a warm fuzzy as to its data.

I don't recall a USAF Phantom with a Navy style radome, for instance. So the pic may show a Franken-Phantom.

USAF serial numbers start with last two digits of the year of build; eg, 91-313 (an F-15E built in 1991)

I imagine that by the 2030s or '40s, duplication of numbers won't be considered an issue.

So, do you think B-52s will be retired before they are 100 years old?

I hope to be around to find out--if I will be aware of it.

I found another photo of a 1950s-build plane with an odd number, so there must be a wrinkle I'm not aware of--which should not be surprising.

No, not the year of production. The first two digits are the fiscal year (FY) in which the item is ordered a not necessarily the year in which it was completed.  In this case the F-15E is the 313th aircraft/missile ordered in FY 1991.

Joe Baugher has a nice document about this subject.

Only plane that managed to down itself with gun fire.

Thanks, I was blanking on that one.

Me, too.  My first thought was F3H Demon, since they were all contemporaries.

The Demon was a pretty cool-looking plane in its own right.  If it had had a decent engine, who knows?

Noteworthy thing of the F3H is how much it looks like a predecessor of the F4H.

Yep.  In fact, if you go back to the FH-1 Phantom, you can trace the similarities right through to the Phantom II.

All engines of that era where questionable. Usually not having enough power for the airplane.

True, but some engines fell really short of expectations; Westinghouse and Allison designs in particular.

You don't get much cooler than F-4s in SEA camo!

It is, in fact, the ultimate.

F-101 and F-104 are hot, but the Phantom is it. For unknown reasons I'm not getting any Voodoo love on my FB feed, but this ain't bad;

I liked  CF-101 in the Canadian white livery with the red racing stripes.

I haven't seen that, in fact I find relatively few good photos of the Voodoo. Particularly in flight. If you find 'em, post them up. I bet there are quite a few closet Voodoo fans lurking in the shadows here.
