Ivanhoe Posted November 6 Posted November 6 I've always found the Hellcat to be too bland and boring, but slap a radar on it and it gets interesting. Â
Ivanhoe Posted November 6 Posted November 6 This is just showing off; F6F-3 Hellcat launching from the hangar catapult aboard the USS Yorktown (CV-10), 1943.

Ivanhoe Posted November 11 Posted November 11 D4Y3 Model 33 Judy. A clean-looking bird. According to Wikipedia, the D4Y2 variant could carry 500 kg of bombs (plural? not sure how two 250 kg bombs would fit in that snug belly). Kind of a small bird for bombing, but maybe it was one of those things where a carrier could deliver more ordnance with more numerous, smaller bombers. The watercooled variants of the D4Y are very nice looking. In an ideal world I'd like to compare the aerodynamic performance of the radials vs watercooled, but the google search engine is deteriorating before our eyes.Â

D4Y1 had only fuselage hard point for 1 x 500kg bomb max. D4Y2 introduced two underwing hard points for 2 x 60kg bombs, and max load was either 1 x 500kg or 1 x 250kg + 2Â x 60kg D4Y3 improved fuselage hard point to be able to carry 800kg AP bomb and underwing ones to be able to carry 250kg bomb each, and max load was either 1 x 800kg or 3 x 250kg bombs.
