sunday Posted November 7, 2013 Posted November 7, 2013 sunday.....would Sir like a little alcohol with his peat? I also like Speyside, but Islay reminds me of the beach at my hometown, where the first rail line in Peninsular Spain was built along the coast.
Mr King Posted November 8, 2013 Posted November 8, 2013 For Christmas I would like to buy my best friend, and my barber each a respectable bottle of booze of either scotch or bourbon variety. I would like to spend around 30-40 bucks a bottle. I am not hugely knowledgeable on my whiskeys, if anyone could point me in the right direction I would appreciate it. If I had it my way I would buy them each a bottle of Glenlevit Nadurra which is one of my favorites, but I just dont have that kind of money this year.
EchoFiveMike Posted November 11, 2013 Posted November 11, 2013 Do you have any idea what they like? The Macallan 10yr fine oak is a nice drink that's very friendly to novice SMS drinkers. The Yamazaki 12 is also very pleasant. The Balvenie 12 is also good. All are about $40-45 locally. SMS is currently on an upswing in price, so might be a little above your price range. Woodford Reserve is my bourbon of choice and right about $35/bottle. S/F....Ken M

Geez, if you are going to be slinging around bottles of WOODFORD to your barber for Christmas, I volunteer to cut your hair. I can do all kinds of styles: the buzz cut, the Mohawk, the mental patient. . .

Ha, well besides having cut my hair for almost 30 years, he is also a friend who has been there for me when things got shitty.

Simon Tan Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 Don't get straight into the oddball caskings with Scotch. Lots and lots of experimentation now, including Aging in Sauterne casks. I reckon the Glenlivet 12 or Macallan 12 to be a very good baseline for a Speyside. 10s tend to be rather too bright. Woodford is a pretty good bourbon. The small batch fashionista stuff can be quite hit and miss in my experience.
BP Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 Just came back from my neighbor's funeral reception. Just a great old guy: Century-series fighter jock, Ivy League rower, my fishing and advice buddy (an odder couple not seen around these parts, the two of us, separated by 30+ years, bass fishing out of a tiny 9' dinghy on our lake). I'm sure gonna miss him. He gave me a big ol' bottle of Woodford for the Kentucky Derby party we usually hosted most years, but didn't this one. So I am finishing off the last dram of my old bottle and cracking open his tonight by the fire pit.

EchoFiveMike Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 Yeah, single malt scotch is awful; bourbon is where it's at. Because I'm a nice guy, I'll take all that SMS off your hands, for free. I won't even charge you for the service. S/F....Ken M
EchoFiveMike Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 What can I say, I'm moved by the Christmas Spirit! S/F....Ken M
