Sardaukar Posted March 6, 2007 Posted March 6, 2007 Glenfiddich is damn good! But I'm myself more into blended ones...Famous Grouse is my favourite.
EchoFiveMike Posted March 6, 2007 Posted March 6, 2007 What do you think of it? It's possibly my favorite scotch, but people tend to either really like it, or really detest it. Maybe with more in the latter camp. Have not cracked the bottle yet. Maybe this weekend. S/F....Ken M

Maybe with more in the latter camp. I cannot see how that would be possible. I would think that a dedicated Scotch drinker would be attracted to strong flavors in their spirits. My favorite Scotch: "Yes". Edited to add: I just had my first "over-40" physical, and at the Dental Clinic they had me fill out a form where I was to check "yes" or "no" to a list of questions. One of the questions was, "Do you drink alcohol on a regular basis". I checked "yes" in the required box, and in the "comments" box, I checked Question 11b - "Oh, Hell Yeah! DB Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 See, that's what I think too. If you can't take the strong, peaty flavor, then stick to pina coladas and wine coolers. But some people... That's bizarre, in my opinion. In fact, I'd almost go so far as to say that comparing Laphroaig type Scotch with Glenfiddich style Scotch is not really comparing the same type of thing - the flavours are so different. I don't particularly take to the Islay malts - the "iodine" flavour isn't to my taste. You seem to be suggesting something analogous to people needing to like all beer because they like a particular brand. David
Stevely Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 Actually, it was merely an attempt at humor gone awry. I wouldn't take it seriously.

Stevely Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 Ah. I wasn't expecting that level of subtlety from an American Me neither!

Maybe with more in the latter camp. Broke it open tonight. I like it. Really strong nose, lots of peat and smoke. Very different, but not bad at all. I'll allow it S/F....Ken M
FOXMG Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 If you ever get the chance try Glen Kinchie from down the Edinburgh way. I really fell in love with this scotch, a bit lighter but still really flavorful. Of course on the cheap you cant go wrong with Ballantines.
Archie Pellagio Posted March 19, 2007 Posted March 19, 2007 While i'll drink anti-freeze if i'm desperate i've always liked glenlivet for a single malt, laphroaig is awful in my view, but i won't pour it down the sink. I actually quite like johnnie black label, yes not a single malt, but goes down a treat. Glen Livet or Glenfiddich for me usually. Out of the cheap and nast's, IMO the best is Hanky Bannisters. As for age vs flavour - yes! Age means very little compared to flavour, you can buy some 12 year blends for as much as a standard 5 year blend, and you can taste it.
baboon6 Posted March 19, 2007 Posted March 19, 2007 Irish! Irish all the way! Bushmill's, Jameson's, Tullamore Dew. I find the taste of most Scotches too rough.
Archie Pellagio Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 Irish! Irish all the way! Bushmill's, Jameson's, Tullamore Dew. I find the taste of most Scotches too rough. The triple distilled irish stuff is definately smoother, but can lack that bit if kick to it, good for swigging though Jameson and dry... mmmmmm
oldsoak Posted March 24, 2007 Posted March 24, 2007 (edited) If you really want a little above the ordinary, try a cask strength single malt scotch. You will need to add water unless you have VERY firm and manly grip! Edited March 24, 2007 by oldsoak

It does tend to put hair on your chest. S/F....Ken M
Tzefa Posted March 25, 2007 Posted March 25, 2007 Usually its Glenfiddich for me, but someone introduced me to Caol Ila recently - great stuff, really smooth, better than Bowmore or the likes, imho.Think its gonna be my favorite now : )
Doug97 Posted May 3, 2007 Posted May 3, 2007 If you ever get the chance try Glen Kinchie from down the Edinburgh way. I really fell in love with this scotch, a bit lighter but still really flavorful. Of course on the cheap you cant go wrong with Ballantines.YES! That's my favourite. Extremely dry, spicy, not very peaty. Although I do like the very peaty ones too. I guess I like the two extremems of the spectrum. Only single malt, though, the blended ones are half grain whisky (in other words, half vodka).
Doug97 Posted May 3, 2007 Posted May 3, 2007 Irish! Irish all the way! Bushmill's, Jameson's, Tullamore Dew. I find the taste of most Scotches too rough.Have you tried Auchentoshan? Lowland, which means it's one of the least peaty of the scotches, plus triple distilled like Irish whiskey.
mikegolf Posted May 4, 2007 Posted May 4, 2007 Oh, I just thought of something. When I fly out, I will HAVE to hit the duty free shop. You can't just walk past can you? So, all UK members, after my three great years in your country, what three or four single malts would best serve to rekindle fond memories on a nice Texas evening? Looking forward to your thoughts. P.S. You have about two weeks to decide...

One day we'll all three get together and do it up Charly.Shot What? You mean I should bring one of my sisters? Or you're bringing a guest? One day ... never know what a tomorrow can bring (thank goodness sometimes!!!) My Christmas dinner was nice ... a solitary enjoyed Christmas Day and meal, a good dinner, roast beef totally plugged with fresh garlic, and various veggies and whole mushrooms surround, one roaster full in the oven, meal drizzzled with pan drippings/sauce. Excellent! Turned out not bad ... roast a tad too cooked. 15 minutes less woulda been perfect (wasn't paying attention) but still great! Edited December 26, 2007 by VenerableDamePW
