Juan Sosa Posted December 6, 2006 Posted December 6, 2006 I am sure the Generals in Brazil are uncomfortable with Venezuela having Flankers of the latests version in a border country. 400487 Rod, Su-30MK2 are hardly the latest Flankers. They are not even comparable to Su-30MKM for Malaysia. Not to mention Su-30MKI or even less with the Su-35 that Brazil was considering. They are clearly the most potent fighters in South America at the moment. At least in terms of payload and range. However, technologically speaking the Chilean F-16C/D Block 50 aircraft are more advanced.

A bunch of Flanklers connected to a SIVAM GCI could really provide air protection for the Amazon area.

Our few MiG 29s and Mirage 2000s are flying crap and the only hope are the Chilean F-16s, tough I'm more concerned about the plans for manufacturing 300,000 more AK-103s. It is rumored that Hugo Chavez has close ties with Farc.

Daan Posted December 6, 2006 Posted December 6, 2006 It's confirmed, they capture weapons that are from Venezuela. Could you provide a source and mention what type of weapons were exactly captured?
Juan Sosa Posted December 6, 2006 Posted December 6, 2006 Could you provide a source and mention what type of weapons were exactly captured?400722 Over the years there have been plenty of seizures of FAL's, ammo, supplies and even AT-4's that were from Venezuelan stocks. However, in most cases these were captured by the FARC during raids in Venezuela, or supplied in small scale by corrupt officers in border posts. So far there is no evidence that shows the FARC receiving supplies from the Venezuela government. This is not to say that Chavez has been a little too friendly with the FARC, and the fear of Ak-103's, or ammo (more likely) being supplied to the guerrillas is not entirely misplaced.
pit Posted December 6, 2006 Posted December 6, 2006 Ladies and Gentlemen First ever pic of a Su-30MK2 of the Venezuelan Air Force, taken over the skies of Barcelona, it's the first day flight of the bird after being assembled. Credits to Longhorn via FAV-Club Forum, thumbs up!

gewing Posted December 8, 2006 Posted December 8, 2006 Leo, I actually think this is a stupid waste of money that should be put to better use, like rebuilding the country's health and education infrastructure. Realistically, Venezuela doesn't need so many fighters (I would say no fighters). Helicopters to help deal with Colombian guerrillas on the border, as well as transport aircraft to rapidly move troops around the border as needed. 100.000 AK-103's plus a factory to build more are also absurd when you don't even have that many men under arms. They justify it with the 1.000.000 man reserve that they want to stand up to deal with the coming war against the empire.400418 Wasn't Chavez giving shelter to one of the Columbian rebel leaders? Scatfest when some bounty hunters took him back iirc... I have to admit, I think Chavez is probably the most dangerous man in the region. OTOH, he isn't exactly a direct threat to the US.
Jim Martin Posted December 8, 2006 Posted December 8, 2006 The people losing here are the Venezuelan people. Chavez is pissing money away on a useless military capability. The only air force in the hemisphere which warrants the purchase of expensive fighters like these, is the United States, and the US will eat the Venezuelan AF for lunch--regardless of skill or bravery of Venezuelan pilots, the USAF and USN would have the FAV grounded and/or destroyed within 24 hours of a conflict, likely with no losses to US aircrew--potentially without even putting US aircrew at risk neutralizing the FAV. This is an expensive publicity gimmick, nothing more. Pretty planes, though.
Corinthian Posted December 8, 2006 Posted December 8, 2006 Yeah, very pretty. Practically useless if not backed up with AEW and SAMs against an opponent such as the USA.

Guest JamesG123 Posted December 12, 2006 Posted December 12, 2006 This is an expensive publicity gimmick, nothing more. Depends on if Chaves is entertaining the notion of becoming the Napoleon of S. America. Then expensive flashy weapons like that are useful in more than one way... But most likely its just his way of thumbing his nose at Bush. Do you think he will pick a fight with the next US president too?

I think Chavez is planning to become the King of Venezuela first, and then he'll look abroad to expand.
yak_v Posted July 11, 2007 Posted July 11, 2007 Seems that 9 of the planes have been already delivered:http://www.myaviation.net/search/photo_sea...&size=large Vladimir
jaro Posted July 11, 2007 Posted July 11, 2007 Those Su-30 are nothing to worry against F-22, but Navy may be in trouble, F/A-18C/D/E/F are in danger against those. E/F are on pair with them thanks to AESA radar.
