Jacques
Well, since it came up in another forum... 1. Trumpeter have made a T-54. It is...ok. It captures most of the features of the T-54. But it is a early Trumpeter kit, and the suspension is off a bit. however, you can get them cheap. 2. Tamiya's excellent T-55 can be backdated to a T-54. The biggest change that people pick up on for the T-54 is the mushroom ventilator on the turret. T-54 had them, T-55 does not. But as with all vehicles that had a huge production run, there are many minor differences even between batches of T-54's and between manufacturing plants. Best to pick a real tank prototype and then adapt your kit to it. Easiest way to build a T-54? Buy and build the Trumpter kit. Next easiest? Add the Trumpeter T-54 turret (or detail bits...compare turrets to see how similar they are) to a Tamiya T-55. Either way will get you a NON T-55. How much more anal you want to go past this... Michael Eastes
The Tamiya T-55 kit looks great, but is a bit pricey at $50,+/-. The T-54 kit from Trumpeter is on sale at Squadron for about $15. That is, unfortunately, a decisive factor for this model builder.
Jacques
Well Michael there is nothing seriously wrong with the Trumpeter kit, it just is not as good as starting with the Tamiya kit. This is the same argument that people have over building a T-62...either build and refine the Tamiya dog-kit or else heavily modify a Tamiya T-55. I know which one I do...and it does not involve the Tamiya T-55 kit.
