Overlooked Aircraft

Recommended Posts

OK, so we all know how aesthetically pleasing a Spitfire, Su-27, or Tomcat can be, but what are some other aircraft that aren't hard on the eyes that people tend to overlook when it come to the "purdiest plane" banter?

To me two planes tend to jump out, the MiG-31 and the Mirage F.1.

Any objectors?

My favourite: the SAAB Draken.

Oh yes... The top lookig pointy one. The side view is pretty plain, but the wings shape is just perfect. My ideal AF would be equipped with Drakens and Flankers only. And perhaps MiG-17s, just for the kicks :)

Glad to see some of my favorites already mentioned; the Draken and the Voodoo. Another one I've liked for aesthetics is the F7U Cutlass.

This one needs to be near the top of the list;

F-101 Voodoo. Sexy plane with long legs.

Exactly. I always thought that was one good looking aircraft! I saw one a few weeks back parked next to an F-4 Phantom and never realized how damn big they were.

I believe an implicit design criterion for the Century Series fighters is that even if they're shot down over enemy territory they will do serious damage on impact. Plus the SAR folks can use seismic triangulation to find the wreckage...

This, and only this:

From the time when people really knew how to design beautiful planes.

Hmmmm, I always thought those old Vickers bombers were some of the most ugly aircraft ever made.

I guess beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.

I always had a soft spot for the XF8U-3 - it had a kind of brutal beauty. Shame it never made it into service.

The YF-107A, another abortive project, had a somewhat similar rakish appeal. Picture from http://www.boeing.com/history/bna/f107.htm
