More photos from Zapaz-2021 exercise, T-80U with Drozd APS. It is an upgraded version (night sight is not TPN-4 with a Buran IR camera). Tanks belongs to 4 Guards Tank Division "Kantemirovskaya", the only unit that uses T-80U.

A former M60 crew on Soviet T-72 and trials carried out after the end of the Cold War: 

The soviet equipment Austria bought was at first hand to test the effect of our ammo (APFSDS, HEAT..). We have the possibility to get in contact with the soviet tanks. An our impression was that the equipment was not so “technical” but very stable when you have to use it.

The testing of the ammo with the M60 was for me very sobering. We started at 1200m target front- no disruption. Next was 1000m. Then 800m. And at least we get the first hit with an effect at about 500m.

only T-80UK, back in a days there was(if was) 50 T-80B experimental batch with Agava, some T-80U(few vehicles) with Agava-2, and some test vehicles with Nocturne

In the past I have found different numbers of T-72 tanks in Czechoslovak army. One of the better numbers counted that exported 78 tanks in total number of received tanks in the army. While these tanks were exported to Syria at the end the information provided by https://armada.vojenstvi.cz/vase-dotazy/152.htm says that czechoslovak report according to CFE treaty on 19th November 1990 declared 897 T-72 tanks in service. Syria thus probably at first received its original order and only later these 78 tanks.

Hmmm 897-35 imported from the Soviet Union = 862 produced for the CZ Army + 984 for export = 1846, but production was only 1782. 122 tanks have been lost!

918 tanks were produced for export according to foreign orders. 864 tanks were produced by order of CS army. Total production 1782. 33 tanks were imported for CS army.

In my post T-72 in Czechoslovakia I have counted from the start that 78 tanks in export numbers (Syria) and not in CS army numbers as I thought that they were not taken over by CS army and went to export directly.

Thanks Pawel, I whish the Poles had their numbers out too. I must have miscounted the imported tanks, do you know if they were 31 T-72s (ie the standard export package for the 70s) and 2 T-72M1s (to serve as production models)?

That 31 from 1978 (30 basic T-72 and one command T-72K) served for evaluation and training. At first this battalion was attached to 3rd Motor-Rifle Division. In 1982 was transferred to 14th Tank Division. Possible one company was for some time with 13th Tank Division. Always they were used as training vehicles.

Two additional tanks were early T-72M obtained as examples for production either in 1980 or 1981 just before czechoslovak production started. I don't know their later fate but they were registered in CS army possession.

- small silhouette = little recognizability
- Availability in battle = due to the high shock resistance of the optics
- excellent ammunition

By the way: We would get if we used the T-72
- by observing modified operational principles and
- as a result, different training for troops and leaders

a 2-class armored force; that cannot be wanted
